Stop Blaming Leaders, Change Begins With You, EARCOM Tells Nigerians

Stop blaming leaders, change begins with you, EARCOM tells Nigerians. The Head of the Media and Advocacy Unit of the Akwa Ibom State Ethical and Attitudinal Reorientation Commission, EARCOM, Rev. Osondu Ahirika PhD has rejected the notion that leaders are solely to be blamed for the problems of the nation, harping that citizens must return to the “change begins with me” campaign.

Dr Ahirika said EARCOM will continue its campaign for a mindset shift and the understanding that until they become good followers and realise the need to ‘change’ first before asking for good leaders, then the problem of bad governance will continue because leaders are a reflection of their followers.

Ahirika who spoke as a guest on the Big Talk on Passion 94.5 FM Uyo on Monday, while conceding that attitudinal change should be a ”top-down approach”, however, argued that without a corresponding bottom-top approach” reorientation towards raising responsible followership the vision of a great nation will never materialise.

He said Nigeria continues to remain stagnant because citizens blame everything on leaders without making an intentional effort to correct the ills of society by addressing social vices and character flaws they manifest, insisting that, citizens at all levels and rungs of the society should change themselves first, without which leaders who emerge in future will still be flawed as others before them.
