Over 200 Bandits Attack Police Camp in Kebbi, Police Operatives Repel the Attack, Neutralise Many

The Nigeria Police Force confirms that on Monday, 10th August 2026, at about 0600hrs, a large group of armed bandits, numbering over 200 and riding on motorcycles, attacked a security camp at Makuku in Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State, occupied by personnel of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) Platoon 2 and Police Mobile Force (PMF) 48.

On receipt of the distress call, the Commissioner of Police, Kebbi State Command, immediately mobilised and deployed reinforcements, which were further supported by units of the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Air Force drawn from within Kebbi and Katsina States. A fierce exchange of gunfire lasting over two hours ensued between security forces and the attackers.

In the course of the operation, the Force sadly lost ten (10) personnel in the line of duty, while one vigilante member and two civilians also lost their lives in the attack. The remains of the fallen officers have been recovered and deposited at a mortuary in Birnin Kebbi. Next of kin are being duly notified, and further personal details are being withheld out of respect for the families at this time.

The bandits suffered significant losses during the engagement, with at least seventeen (17) attackers believed to have been neutralised and several of their motorcycles destroyed by security forces before they fled the area, with surviving accomplices observed conveying the bodies away on motorcycles as they retreated.

The Inspector-General of Police has commended the gallantry and sacrifice of the officers who repelled the attack and directed the immediate reinforcement of security architecture across Sakaba LGA and neighbouring communities to forestall further attacks.

The Nigeria Police Force extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the officers, the vigilante member, and the civilians who lost their lives, and assures them of full welfare support in line with Force policy. Members of the public are urged to remain calm and to continue supporting security agencies with credible information.

CAS Emphasised on Strategic Leadership as Key to NAF Operational Effectiveness

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has emphasised that effective strategic leadership is critical to sustaining the operational effectiveness, institutional performance and long-term relevance of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

Speaking at the Strategic Leadership and Management Workshop and Induction Ceremony held at Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Abuja, on 12 August 2026, the CAS noted that the increasingly complex security environment, characterised by uncertainty, rapid technological advancement and evolving threats, requires leaders who can anticipate challenges, assess risks, optimise resources and make sound decisions with long-term implications. He stressed that strategic leadership must transcend immediate operational demands by effectively translating available resources and capabilities into meaningful operational effects, in line with the Command Philosophy’s key driver, “Standardised Training and Mission-Focused Capability Development.”

Air Marshal Aneke explained that the workshop was designed to strengthen senior officers’ competencies in strategic leadership, organisational effectiveness, policy formulation, governance, decision-making and resource management. He charged participants to interrogate established practices, engage meaningfully with facilitators and translate lessons from the programme into practical improvements within their commands and formations.

The CAS emphasised that officers of air rank have a responsibility to strengthen institutional performance, foster innovation, develop subordinates and ensure that decisions taken today contribute to the NAF’s long-term effectiveness. He also highlighted the induction of eligible participants as Full Members of the Institute of Strategic Management of Nigeria, Chartered, noting its professional value in strengthening competencies relevant to senior military leadership and institutional governance.

The CAS commended the organisers and the Institute of Strategic Management of Nigeria for the collaboration, expressing confidence that the programme would enhance participants’ professional development and contribute to stronger NAF institutional and operational capacity.

He described leadership development as a force multiplier, stressing that operational effectiveness depends not only on platforms, equipment and personnel, but also on the quality of leadership, decision-making, resource management and innovation that translate capabilities into decisive airpower effects.

NPF Warns Against Electoral Violence, Unveils Security Arrangements for Osun Governorship Election

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, warns political parties, candidates, supporters, and the public that the Osun State Governorship Election scheduled for Saturday, 15th August, 2026, must be peaceful. Anyone who attempts to disrupt the process through violence, intimidation, or thuggery will face the full weight of the law.

The NPF notes recurring election offences such as ballot snatching, voter intimidation, vote buying, and clashes between rival supporters, and stresses that none of these will be tolerated. Any person involved in such offences, whether as a direct perpetrator or sponsor, will be arrested and prosecuted, regardless of political affiliation or status.

The Force affirms that securing the election is the sole responsibility of constitutionally recognised security agencies. The Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun), vigilante groups, the Joint Civilian Task Force (CJTF), hunters’ associations, community-based security groups, neighbourhood watch outfits, and all other non-state or quasi-security formations have no role in election security, including escorting materials, guarding polling units, mounting checkpoints, or bearing arms. The NPF urges full compliance in the interest of peace.

The Nigeria Police Force clarifies that authorised agencies for election security are the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Correctional Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other statutory bodies working together. This joint security deployment covers all 30 Local Government Areas of Osun State, securing polling units, collation centres, electoral materials, officials, observers, journalists, and voters.

Political parties, candidates, and the public are warned against engaging, arming, or deploying any non-state security outfit for election-related purposes. Any member or sponsor of such unauthorised outfits will be arrested and dealt with according to the law.

The NPF reiterates that all firearms, dangerous weapons, and offensive materials are strictly prohibited around polling units and collation centres, except those lawfully carried by accredited security personnel on election duty. Anyone found culpable of electoral offences, including thuggery, obstruction of electoral officials, unlawful possession of election materials, hate speech, or incitement to violence, will be arrested and charged to court.

The Force has directed all commanders and personnel deployed for the election to act professionally, impartially, and firmly, in line with the rule of law and respect for human rights. The public, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, the media, and accredited observers are urged to report suspicious persons, movements, or activities to the nearest security agency or established emergency channels—if you see something, say something.
