ICPC Boss Charges Staff to Prioritise Integrity, Accountability in Service Delivery

The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, has charged officers of the Commission to uphold integrity, accountability, fairness and professionalism in service delivery. He emphasised that exceptional customer service must become a daily institutional practice rather than an activity reserved for special occasions.

The charge was delivered at the Commission’s 2026 Customer Service Week Symposium recently held at its auditorium in Abuja under the theme “The Extra Mile”.

Speaking through the Director, Special Services Department, Prince Hassan Mohammed, Dr Aliyu observed that, as an anti-corruption institution, the Commission must exemplify in its conduct the very standards of public service it advocates. He noted that public confidence depends not only on how the Commission discharges its statutory responsibilities but also on how members of the public are treated during their interactions with its personnel.

The ICPC Chairman urged officers to take ownership of their responsibilities by providing timely and accurate information, treating stakeholders with dignity, protecting confidential information and eliminating avoidable delays in the handling of official matters. He further cautioned that going the extra mile must not translate into bypassing established procedures, compromising due process or granting preferential treatment to individuals on account of their status, influence or personal connections.

Congratulating officers who received awards at the symposium, the Chairman encouraged all personnel to remain diligent and committed, emphasising that every contribution to the Commission’s work matters, whether or not it attracts immediate recognition. He also urged participants to ensure that the symposium produced practical recommendations and measurable commitments capable of translating into lasting improvements in the Commission’s service delivery.

In his remarks, the Secretary to the Commission, Mr Clifford Okwudiri Oparaodu, explained excellent service delivery as one of the Commission’s foremost priorities. He expressed the Commission’s confidence in the capacity of its Officers to improve on performance and service delivery, noting that its second-place ranking in the 2025 SERVICOM assessment demonstrated its commitment to service excellence.

Mr Oparaodu further urged officers to sustain this commitment beyond Customer Service Week by making effective and efficient service delivery a defining feature of the Commission’s operations. His remarks reinforced the symposium’s central message that service excellence should be embedded in organisations’ institutional culture rather than confined to a single commemorative week. He was represented by the spokesperson of the Commission.

Earlier, the Acting National SERVICOM Coordinator, Mrs Helen Lawal, highlighted the objectives of the 2026 Customer Service Week, emphasising the need for officers to anticipate customers’ needs, respond promptly to enquiries and collaborate across departments to resolve complaints efficiently. She noted that the initiative was designed to promote innovation, continuous improvement and stronger engagement with stakeholders.

Mrs Lawal added that recognising frontline personnel and improving communication channels would strengthen public confidence in the Commission and foster a culture of service excellence, integrity, accountability and efficiency. The symposium concluded with a clear charge to personnel: to carry the spirit of “The Extra Mile” into their daily duties, ensuring that the Commission’s pursuit of a corruption-free Nigeria is matched by the quality of service it delivers to the public.

Nigeria Customs, TMPL Test Cutting-Edge Cargo Scanners in China Ahead of Deployment

The two-week exercise, led by the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs (DCG) in charge of the Information Communication and Technology/Modernisation Department, Oluyomi Adebakin, took place from 9 to 20 October 2026 at Nuctech Company Limited’s facility in China, the manufacturer of the advanced systems. The delegation conducted comprehensive technical verification of the high-tech scanners and the Electronic Cargo Tracking System, designed to work in synergy to enhance cargo examination and real-time monitoring from port to destination.

During the test, DCG Adebakin reaffirmed Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi’s commitment to using technology as a catalyst for trade facilitation, revenue optimisation, and national security. She said the FAT is a crucial quality-assurance process to ensure the scanners and tracking system meet contractual specifications and global operational standards before shipment to Nigeria.

“The Nigeria Customs Service, under the leadership of CGC Adeniyi, is committed to ensuring that we deploy only cutting-edge, fit-for-purpose technology that will fast-track cargo examination, reduce dwell time, and enhance our ability to detect concealments and prohibited items, improve revenue generation, as well as facilitate legitimate trade”, CG Adebakin said.

For his part, the Acting Comptroller, Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII), Deputy Comptroller of Customs Umar Madugu, noted that deploying the new scanners and ECTS will significantly reduce the need for 100% physical examination, minimise human contact, curb cargo diversion, and improve efficiency across Customs formations.

Speaking on behalf of Trade Modernisation Project Limited, the company’s General Manager, Bamidele Chinedu, described the FAT as a milestone in implementing the TMP, stressing that integrating NII scanners and the Electronic Cargo Tracking System is central to achieving a transparent, technology-driven Customs system.
