Government Approves N542 Million For Payment Of UTME, BECE Fees

Government approves N542 million for payment of UTME, BECE fees. Mr Jones explained that N145.4 million would cover CEE for 25,100 basic six pupils and N215.2 million for 30,500 students qualified for BECE.

Governor Ahmed Ododo of Kogi has approved N542 million for the payment of 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UMTE) fees to 18,734 students in public schools across the state.

The amount will also cover the Common Entrance Examination (CEE) for Basic six pupils and Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) fees for students in public schools.
The Commissioner for Education, Wemi Jones, disclosed this at a press conference on Tuesday in Lokoja.

Mr Jones explained that N145.4 million would cover CEE for 25,100 basic six pupils and N215.2 million for 30,500 students qualified for BECE.

He added that N181.7 million would cover UTME fees for 18,734 students, amounting to N542.4 million.
Mr Jones said the gesture was in line with the state government’s law that provides for free examination registration fees for Kogi students in public primary and secondary schools.

The commissioner said the law was enacted by former Governor Yahaya Bello and expressed the commitment of the Ododo-led administration to consolidate the gains recorded by the previous administration in the education sector.

In October 2024, the state government released more than N661.3 million for the payment of 2024/2025 West African Examination Council fees for students in public schools.

Mr Jones said the state government had spent N1.2 billion on payment for public school students’ external and internal examinations in the 2024/2025 academic session.

According to him, the gesture significantly increased school enrolment rates in the state, with the 2024 payments increasing school enrolment by 18 per cent.

“These efforts had greatly reduced the number of out-of-school children that remained a great challenge in the education sector.
“It has also enhanced students’ performance in national examinations,” he said.

The commissioner commended Mr Ododo for prioritising access to quality education to reduce poverty and illiteracy rates.

He implored the schools’ principals and other heads to cooperate with the ministry for a seamless registration exercise for the benefit of the targeted children.

However, Mr Jones warned that the government would come down heavily on any school principal who tried to shortchange the students or sabotage the process.

Government Warns Churches Against Noise Pollution During School Hours In Anambra

Government warns churches against noise pollution during school hours in Anambra. The government ordered the church to reschedule its weekday activities to commence from 4:00 p.m., after school hours.

The Anambra government has expressed concern over the alleged noise pollution from church activities during school hours in Onitsha, the commercial nerve centre.

The education commissioner, Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, stated this while speaking on a petition written to the ministry by a private school in the city.

The school alleged that noise from a nearby church’s activities during school hours was disrupting its academic activities.
Ms Chuma-Udeh described the development as worrisome.

The petition, signed by the school’s proprietress, Ngozi Udeh, was filed against Divine Dominion Prophetic Ministry, located directly opposite the school premises.

According to Ms Udeh, the church, built in 2024, has recently intensified its activities, generating excessive noise, particularly on Tuesdays, when services reportedly run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

She further alleged that the noise was consistently distracting students and teachers, thereby disrupting teaching and learning during school hours, despite several appeals to the church leadership.

Addressing both parties in her office in Awka on Tuesday, the commissioner said the Governor Charles Soludo-led administration would not condone any act that infringes on students’ constitutional right to learn in a peaceful and conducive environment.

She noted that noise pollution was an offence under the Nigerian law and was punishable once established.

She therefore advised religious institutions to ensure that noise generated on their premises was properly contained, especially when schools are located within hearing distance.

Ms Chuma-Udeh also urged the church leadership to explore peaceful ways of coexisting with the school, in alignment with the true values of Christianity, and given that the school had existed in the area before the church was built.

The commissioner ordered the church to reschedule its weekday activities to commence from 4:00 p.m., after school hours. She warned that failure to comply with the directive would compel the ministry to involve the Ministry of Environment, with the attendant legal consequences.

The commissioner said that while churches might hold activities from morning to evening on Saturdays and Sundays, external examinations, such as WAEC, NECO and JAMB, must take precedence, even on Saturdays.

Responding, the assistant pastor of the church, Emmanuel Ukpabi, promised that the church would work harmoniously with the school to ensure mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
