Zamfara North Senate Race: Shinkafi Demands Direct Primaries, Rejects Consensus Deal

A senatorial aspirant for Zamfara North, Dr. Sani Shinkafi, has warned against any attempt to impose candidates ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries, insisting that only a transparent and democratic process would be acceptable to party members and supporters. Shinkafi made the remarks while addressing journalists after undergoing screening by the APC screening committee, where he formally declared his intention to contest for the Zamfara North Senatorial seat. The aspirant firmly rejected the idea of consensus arrangements, stressing that direct primaries remain the most credible method of selecting candidates. “I don’t believe in consensus. I believe in direct primaries,” he said. “No amount of harassment, threats, or money politics will stop me from contesting.” He alleged that certain influential figures within the party were working to undermine the democratic process by attempting to handpick candidates ahead of the elections. Shinkafi also accused a serving Minister of State for Defence of allegedly using his office to influence the political process in the state, claiming such actions could create tension within the party. “We will not allow anyone to impose candidates on the people. Any attempt to silence genuine aspirants will be resisted,” he stated. The senatorial hopeful appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC National Working Committee to ensure fairness and transparency during the conduct of the primaries in Zamfara State. According to him, the state needs inclusive representation and equal political opportunities for all zones and communities. Shinkafi further lamented what he described as the long-standing political exclusion of some communities in Zamfara North, saying several areas had not produced a senator since the return of democracy in 1999. “For many years, some communities have remained politically marginalized. This is the time for fairness, inclusion, and equal representation,” he added. Despite his concerns, the aspirant commended aspects of the APC screening process, describing the nomination and screening procedures as organized and accessible to contestants. His comments come amid growing political tension within the APC in Zamfara State as aspirants intensify consultations and preparations ahead of the party primaries.

Mr Sanwo-Olu, in a statement on Thursday, described the Senate’s approval of the bill’s 26 clauses as a landmark development in Nigeria’s democratic and security evolution.

The Lagos governor said the passage of the bill represented one of the most significant reforms of the nation’s security architecture, with the potential to strengthen grassroots policing and improve public safety.

The governor described the parliamentary approval as “epochal”, saying the development further demonstrated Mr Tinubu’s long-standing commitment to true federalism and progressive governance in Nigeria.

“Today is a great day for our country and a moment to celebrate the triumph of genuine democratic and developmental ideas over parochial sentiments,” Mr Sanwo-Olu said.

According to him, the president has consistently championed the creation of state police since serving as governor of Lagos between 1999 and 2007, despite resistance from various quarters.

“State police have been top of mind for President Tinubu since 1999, when he governed Lagos. We are happy to witness its emergence in Nigeria today,” Mr Sanwo-Olu said.

Mr Sanwo-Olu said the proposed state police structure would boost efforts to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities threatening national development and stability.

The governor commended the president’s vision, resilience and unwavering dedication to reforms aimed at deepening federalism and improving governance outcomes across the federation.

For the avoidance of doubt, the individuals featured in the video are not bandits.
