The project was commissioned on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, in Kano State by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, said the completion of the road demonstrated the Tinubu administration’s determination to deliver strategic infrastructure, improve national connectivity and facilitate the movement of people and goods across the country.
Umahi explained that several sections of the expressway remained unfinished when the current administration assumed office due to rising construction costs and slow project execution, which resulted in the termination of the previous contract.
He said President Tinubu subsequently directed the Federal Ministry of Works to prioritise the completion of the outstanding sections to ensure the road met the required standards of quality, safety and durability.
According to the minister, the President also directed the extension of the Kano section of the expressway to Malam Aminu Kano International Airport.
Umahi disclosed that Lot 1 of the project, covering 118 kilometres at an estimated cost of ₦252 billion, had been completed.
He added that the government had adopted continuously reinforced concrete pavement technology on substantial portions of the road to enhance durability, reduce maintenance costs and ensure value for public investment.
The minister said the installation of solar-powered streetlights had also improved visibility at night and enhanced motorists’ safety.
Describing the expressway as a strategic national asset, Umahi noted that the road connects the Federal Capital Territory with major commercial and population centres in Northern Nigeria.
He said the highway supports trade, commerce, haulage, economic activities and social interaction across the country.
The minister also highlighted other ongoing federal road projects in the North-West, including the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, Kano Northern Bypass, Kano-Katsina Road, Zaria-Funtua-Gusau-Sokoto Road and Section I of the Kano-Maiduguri Road dualisation project.
He commended Governor Yusuf for his commitment to infrastructure development and people-oriented governance, while appreciating the contractors, consultants, supervising engineers, security agencies and other stakeholders involved in delivering the project.
Umahi urged Nigerians to recognise the importance of sustained investment in road infrastructure, stressing that efficient road networks were essential for economic growth, national integration and commercial activities.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to completing ongoing road projects across the six geopolitical zones.
The minister also called on Nigerians to support President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, saying the administration deserved another opportunity to continue its infrastructure development efforts.
In his remarks, Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to Tinubu for prioritising the completion of the expressway.
He said the road would strengthen transportation links, improve accessibility and support commercial activities in Kano and neighbouring states.
The governor described the project as a significant development for Kano State and the wider North-West region, commending the Federal Government for ensuring that the outstanding works were completed rather than abandoned.
Earlier, the Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, described the commissioning as part of the Federal Government’s infrastructure development programme.
He commended the President for providing the political will and policy direction needed to advance the completion of inherited road projects.
The event also featured the commissioning of two urban road projects executed by the Kano State Government under its urban renewal programme. They included the rehabilitation of Audu Bako Way and the dualisation of Nassarawa Hospital Roads.
The projects are expected to improve urban mobility, ease traffic congestion and enhance transportation within Kano metropolis.
Providing technical details, the Director of Highways, Construction and Rehabilitation, Engr. David Yiltong, said the commissioned works comprised completed asphaltic pavement at the Kano end of the expressway and an additional section along the Karfi and Kunkumi axis, bringing the total completed length to 30.58 kilometres.
He said the completed works had improved road conditions, reduced travel discomfort, enhanced traffic flow and improved access to communities and commercial centres along the corridor.
The Engineer’s Representative, Engr. Chukwuma Kalu Igwe, explained that the project covered pavement construction and rehabilitation, asphalt surfacing, drainage works, road structure improvements, streetlights, CCTV cameras and other associated infrastructure.
In separate goodwill messages, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, Senator Allwell Onyesoh, commended the President for ensuring the completion of the outstanding sections, describing the expressway as a vital link for Kano’s commercial and industrial activities.
Similarly, the Chairman of the House Committee on Works, Hon. Akin Alabi, praised Tinubu for providing the political will to address longstanding infrastructure challenges.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, North-West Zone, Abdullahi Tanko Yakasai, also commended the Federal and Kano State governments for their infrastructure development efforts.

Abuja-Kano
The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Faruk Umar Faruk, expressed appreciation to the President for providing the resources and political commitment required to complete projects initiated by previous administrations, particularly those started under the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The traditional ruler rejected claims that the Tinubu administration was working against Northern Nigeria, arguing that the completion of major infrastructure projects demonstrated the President’s commitment to the region’s development. He also expressed support for Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
Other dignitaries at the ceremony included Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory Mariya Mahmoud, former governors, legislators and representatives of the Kano and Zazzau Emirates.
The Federal Ministry of Works reiterated its commitment to completing critical federal road projects under the Renewed Hope Agenda to strengthen national connectivity, facilitate commerce and improve Nigerians’ quality of life.

The two-week exercise, led by the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs (DCG) in charge of the Information Communication and Technology/Modernisation Department, Oluyomi Adebakin, took place from 9 to 20 October 2026 at Nuctech Company Limited’s facility in China, the manufacturer of the advanced systems. The delegation conducted comprehensive technical verification of the high-tech scanners and the Electronic Cargo Tracking System, designed to work in synergy to enhance cargo examination and real-time monitoring from port to destination.
During the test, DCG Adebakin reaffirmed Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi’s commitment to using technology as a catalyst for trade facilitation, revenue optimisation, and national security. “The Nigeria Customs Service, under the leadership of CGC Adeniyi, is committed to ensuring that we deploy only cutting-edge, fit-for-purpose technology that will fast-track cargo examination, reduce dwell time, and enhance our ability to detect concealments and prohibited items, improve revenue generation, as well as facilitate legitimate trade”, CG Adebakin said.
For his part, the Acting Comptroller, Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII), Deputy Comptroller of Customs Umar Madugu, noted that deploying the new scanners and ECTS will significantly reduce the need for 100% physical examination, minimise human contact, curb cargo diversion, and improve efficiency across Customs formations.
