President Tinubu’s Scheduled Nationwide Democracy Day Broadcast Cancelled
President Tinubu’s scheduled nationwide Democracy Day broadcast cancelled. President Bola Tinubu’s scheduled nationwide broadcast at 7am on June 12 to mark Democracy Day has been cancelled.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Segun Imohiosen, director of information and public relations at the office of secretary to the federation (OSGF), said the cancellation was due to Tinubu’s scheduled appearance at a joint session of the national assembly.
“Due to H.E. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, scheduled attendance at the National Assembly Joint Session, the Presidential National Broadcast on June 12 has been cancelled,” the statement reads.
“President Bola Ahmed will deliver his address from the National Assembly. All other plans are in order as announced earlier.”
The president had initially been billed to address the nation at 7 am before attending the joint session later in the day.
The inter-ministerial committee on Democracy Day had earlier released the list of activities lined up for the celebration in a statement issued by Abdulhakeem Adeoye on behalf of the director of information and public relations.
Adeoye had in the statement noted that there would be no parade this year to mark the day.
He said a public lecture would be held at 4 pm at the State House conference centre in Abuja.
The theme of the lecture is “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms”.
This year’s event marks 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since the end of military rule in 1999.
Nationwide Democracy Day Broadcast Cancelled
Democracy Day was previously marked on May 29, the swearing-in date for elected officials, until former President Muhammadu Buhari moved it to June 12 in 2018.
The shift was in honour of the annulled 1993 presidential election won by the late MKO Abiola, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll.
IGP Attends RHI Financial Support Presentation for Families of Fallen Heroes by First Lady
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, today, 27th August 2026, attended the presentation of financial support to the families of fallen heroes of the Armed Forces and the Nigeria Police Force. Organized by the Office of the First Lady of Nigeria through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Social Investment Programme, the event took place at the Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

This second edition of the initiative targeted families of security personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty since the inception of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. In total, one thousand six-hundred and thirty-eight (1,638) families of deceased police officers received financial empowerment packages designed to help rebuild their livelihoods and cater to their dependents.
The ceremony was attended by key dignitaries, including Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Her Excellency, Hajia Nana Shettima, Wife of the Vice President; Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, Wife of the Senate President; along with Service Chiefs and the President of POWA alongside wives of heads of security agencies.
Delivering the vote of thanks on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force and the Armed Forces, IGP Disu expressed deep gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the First Lady for the intervention, describing it as a profound demonstration of national gratitude and compassion.
The IGP noted that the Renewed Hope Initiative goes beyond just policy, it is about restoring dignity and standing with our citizens at their most vulnerable moments. Addressing the bereaved families, he assured them that the supreme sacrifices of their loved ones would never be forgotten by a grateful nation.
