Police Rescue 2 Kidnap Victims, Arrests 9 Suspects Kidnappers, Recover Large Caches Of Arms

Police rescue 2 kidnap victims, arrests 9 suspects kidnappers, recover large caches of arms. As IGP Urges Officers To Intensify Fight Against Violent Crimes

The Nigeria Police Force has continued to make substantial progress through proactive policing strategies, in separate operations against criminal elements, resulting in the neutralization of notorious bandits, recovery of firearms and stolen vehicles, and the arrest of numerous suspects involved in kidnapping, cultism, and armed robbery.

The Benue State Police Command has demonstrated its proactive capabilities in a recent operation targeting banditry. On May 3, 2025, acting on credible intelligence, Police operatives attached to the Benue State Command engaged in a gun battle, a group of bandits suspected to be from Shitele and Ukum, who were holding secret meetings at Sankera, planning attacks against security operatives in the area.

During the fierce gun duel near Tse-Gondo axis, three bandits sustained fatal gunshot injuries and were later confirmed dead at the hospital. The operatives recovered several exhibits from the scene, including two locally fabricated guns and some live cartridges.

Similarly, operatives of the Delta State Commands CP Special Assignment team arrested one Henry Okpor, a serial car snatcher, on 22nd April, 2025. A pump-action gun, a Toyota Highlander (Reg. No. RBC-414-BL), and a Hyundai car (Reg. No. LSD-367-DU), believed to be stolen, were recovered from him. The Command has also shown strides in suppressing cultism. On April 25, 2025, a sting operation by the CP Special Assignment team led to the apprehension of Mudiaga Okparume and Arinze Humble, confirmed members of the Vikings confraternity. The operatives recovered two Beretta pistols and five rounds of live ammunition.

Furthermore, in a swift response to a kidnapping incident reported on April 26, 2025, where two persons in Agbarho were kidnapped, operatives of the state command mobilized and trailed the suspects to Uvwiama forest in the Ughelli North LGA, where the operatives successfully rescued the two victims during an intense operation.

Nine suspects were also apprehended, and a cache of weapons was recovered, including three pump-action guns, three double/single-barrel guns, one locally made gun, and thirteen rounds of live cartridges.

These successful operations are a testament to the dedication and proactive measures taken by the Nigeria Police Force to combat violent crimes.

TikTok Not A Social Media Platform, Official Reveals

Brazil Fines TikTok $30m Over Failure to Implement Child Safety

Brazil’s data protection agency on Tuesday fined TikTok nearly $30 million for failing to implement child safety measures in what it said was a “powerful signal” to social media companies.

Brazil has taken a tough stance on the regulation of social media platforms, cracking down on disinformation and requiring users under 16 years to have their accounts linked to those of their parents.

An enforcement director with the ANPD data protection agency, Fabricio Lopes, told a press conference that TikTok “was not taking the necessary measures to prevent adolescents from accessing the platform and from having the data of these children and adolescents processed.”

This data was “being used to offer advertising to adolescents.”

He said the fine of 153.7m reais ($29.9 million) was a “powerful signal to other platforms regarding how seriously the ANPD takes this work” and that the agency hoped they “get the message.”

TikTok agreed last week to pay $400m to settle a lawsuit with the US Department of Justice over claims that the video-sharing platform collected children’s personal data without parental permission.

This month, the ANPD also ordered popular streaming platform Discord to suspend livestreams and video calls after a teenage girl was allegedly encouraged to take her own life during a broadcast.

The agency told AFP that an appeal filed by Discord on Monday against the suspension is under review.

ANPD director Lorena Coutinho said the agency had, last week, initiated proceedings to verify the compliance of 22 social media networks and platforms with a law passed this year to protect children and teens online.

In addition to the fine, the ANPD ordered TikTok parent company ByteDance to delete data collected in violation of regulations.

Coutinho said TikTok had committed to suspend all adverts for users who are not logged in.

TikTok has committed to “implementing a compliance plan to improve the protection of children and adolescents,” the ANPD said.

The platform will be required to automatically apply stricter privacy settings to accounts belonging to children under the age of 16, strengthen parental supervision systems, and implement stricter content filters.

TikTok did not immediately respond to requests for comment from AFP.

In 2024, the platform X was blocked for 40 days in Brazil, until the social media network owned by the world’s richest person, Elon Musk, complied with the Supreme Court’s orders to remove accounts spreading disinformation.
