Obi: Some Of Tinubu’s Ambassadorial Picks Shocking

Obi: Some of Tinubu’s ambassadorial picks shocking. Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, says some of the names President Bola Tinubu has forwarded to the senate for confirmation as ambassadors are shocking.

On November 29, Tinubu sent the names of 32 ambassadorial nominees to the legislature after sending the names of three nominees last week.

Among the nominees are Reno Omokri, former presidential aide; Mahmood Yakubu, former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); Femi Fani-Kayode, ex-aviation minister; and Okezie Ikpeazu, former governor of Abia.

In a post on X on Monday, Obi said some of the names on the list leave much to be desired.

“Yes, some of the names being paraded to represent us as ambassadors globally are shocking. But with a leadership that has allowed mediocrity, corruption, and impunity to rise to the top, who else did you expect them to choose?” he asked.
He also dwelt on the economic hardship afflicting millions of homes.

“When our people are being killed, our leaders are busy hosting dinners. When children are being snatched from their schools, the political class is celebrating and dancing,” he added.

“When families cannot afford their next meal, those in power are welcoming defectors and exchanging gifts as though Nigeria is not burning.

“This is not governance. This is not leadership. And this is certainly not the Nigeria we deserve.”

The ex-Anambra governor said the suffering in the country has become a “pain one carries silently”.
Obi shared the story of how a group of young Nigerians approached him at the Abuja airport on Monday and expressed concern that he had not commented on the recent challenges confronting the country.

“It is the kind of pain that makes you remember the humiliating remark from the American president who referred to Nigeria as a ‘now disgraced country’,” he said.
“Today, when you look around, you begin to understand why the world speaks of us that way.”

ECOWAS sets to deploy standby force after failed coup in Benin Republic. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, has condemned an attempted coup by a group of soldiers in Benin Republic.

On Sunday, gunshots were heard near President Patrice Talon’s residence as armoured vehicles deployed in the presidential palace patrolled the precinct.

The group, which labelled itself the Military Committee for Refoundation, said the president and all political officeholders have been effectively removed, and that all institutions have been dissolved.

France Will Intensify Counter-Terror Assistance To Nigeria, Says President Macron

France will intensify counter-terror assistance to Nigeria, says President Macron. French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to strengthen France’s support for Nigeria in tackling terrorism and other security challenges, following a discussion with President Bola Tinubu.

In a tweet on Sunday, Macron said he had conveyed France’s solidarity with Nigeria in the face of “various security challenges, particularly the terrorist threat in the north”.

The French leader added that, at Tinubu’s request, France would intensify its partnership with Nigerian authorities and provide additional support to populations affected by violence.

Macron also called on other international partners to step up engagement, warning that “no one can remain a spectator” in addressing the threat posed by violent extremist groups.

“I spoke with President Tinubu of Nigeria, @officialABAT. I conveyed France’s solidarity in the face of the various security challenges, particularly the terrorist threat in the North,” he wrote.

“At his request, we will strengthen our partnership with the authorities and our support for the affected populations. We call on all our partners to step up their engagement. No one can remain a spectator.”

Macron is the first world leader to speak on Nigeria’s security situation weeks after US President Donald Trump redesignated the country as a “country of particular concern” over alleged persecution of Christians.

France and Nigeria have maintained a growing military partnership, especially in the areas of training, technology‑transfer and joint maritime security efforts.
