NAF Leverages Global Platform At UN CSW70 To Advance Gender Inclusion, Operational Effectiveness

Gender inclusion. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) leveraged its participation at the 70th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), held from 9–19 March 2026 at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, to reinforce its commitment to gender inclusion as a strategic driver of operational effectiveness.

Represented by Flight Lieutenant Victory Tombari Gbaraba, the Service joined global leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders in advancing practical solutions to promote gender equality and institutional resilience.

The session, which convened representatives from 109 Member States, over 80 ministers, and thousands of civil society actors, focused on the priority theme of strengthening access to justice for all women and girls through inclusive and equitable legal systems.

Deliberations underscored the critical role of eliminating discriminatory laws, addressing structural barriers, and promoting fairness as essential pillars for sustainable development and societal progress.

Aligned with the Command Philosophy of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the NAF continues to institutionalize gender inclusion across its operations by integrating female personnel into diverse specialties and leadership roles.

Through deliberate capacity development, mentorship, and expanded opportunities, the Service is building a more inclusive, professional, and mission-ready force, positioned to effectively meet evolving security challenges while upholding its mandate to protect the nation.

NAF Reinforces Air Power Through Advanced Technical Training On Agusta Westland AW109 Trekker Helicopter

Agusta Westland. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has further strengthened its operational readiness following the successful completion of a six-week specialist training programme on the AW109 Trekker helicopter at the Leonardo Helicopters facility in Italy.

Undertaken under the leadership of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the initiative underscores the Service’s deliberate commitment to building a technically proficient and self-reliant force capable of sustaining modern air operations.

The programme extended beyond routine instruction, providing personnel with intensive hands-on exposure to advanced maintenance procedures, system diagnostics, and the management of critical aircraft subsystems.

These competencies are pivotal to improving aircraft serviceability, reducing mission downtime, and ensuring sustained fleet availability across diverse operational environments. In contemporary air operations, such technical expertise remains a decisive enabler of mission success, particularly in counterinsurgency, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), and rapid mobility missions where responsiveness is critical.

Having completed the training, the personnel have since been redeployed to operational units, where their expertise will immediately enhance fleet performance and mission effectiveness across theatres of operation. Their contribution will strengthen the Nigerian Air Force’s capacity for faster, more reliable responses to emerging threats and the continued protection of Nigeria’s airspace.

Protests Rock Manila As Fuel Shortage Hits Philippines

Protests rock Manila as fuel shortage hits Philippines. The protesters demanded for a reduction in fuel prices and an increase in wages.

Thousands of Filipinos, including jeepney drivers, on Friday, embarked on a strike for the second day in a row to protest a chronic fuel shortage and the soaring cost of available fuel, as the war involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran drags on.

More than 90 per cent of fuel consumed in the Philippines passes through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil route that Iran has reportedly disrupted amid tensions affecting global energy supplies following the assassination of its supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, by U.S. and Israeli forces.

Aggrieved citizens declared a two-day strike to occupy major roads to press home their demands for a reduction in fuel prices and an increase in wages.

The strike comes days after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr declared an energy emergency, warning that the country was depleting its fuel reserves. Mr Marcos announced that the Philippines sought alternative sources of crude oil to ease the strain caused by the war.
