NAF Boosts Elite Warfighting Capacity, Inaugurates 129 Trainees For Special Forces Course In Bauchi

Elite warfighting. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken another decisive step in strengthening its elite warfighting capability with the inauguration of 129 trainees for Special Forces Course 13/2026 at the Special Operations Command (SOC), Bauchi.

The initiative underscores the Service’s deliberate investment in developing highly skilled personnel to support ongoing counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations across various theatres, while advancing broader national security objectives. The training also reflects the command philosophy of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, which prioritises mission-oriented force development, operational readiness, and joint combat effectiveness in addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

In his remarks, the Special Guest of Honour, the Air Officer Commanding Ground Training Command, Air Vice Marshal AG Kehinde, represented by Air Commodore Yahaya Bashir, Commander 251 Base Services Group Bauchi, emphasised the strategic importance of Special Forces training in sustaining combat readiness.

He noted that modern military operations increasingly require adaptable and highly trained personnel who can operate effectively in harsh and unpredictable environments, particularly in support of ongoing counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism missions. Describing Special Forces personnel as the elite cadre of any military organisation, he charged the trainees to prepare for a demanding but rewarding experience that will directly contribute to operational success in the field.

Earlier, the Commandant of the Regiment Training Centre Annex Bauchi, Squadron Leader Lawrence Akpan, described the training as a critical component of the NAF’s drive to build a resilient, agile, and mission-ready force. He noted that Special Forces training remains central to enhancing operational effectiveness, particularly against complex asymmetric threats posed by insurgents and terrorists.

The ceremony, which marked the formal commencement of the course, was attended by commanders of collocated units in Bauchi as well as Principal Staff Officers from Headquarters Special Operations Command, further underscoring the institutional commitment to force generation in support of national security imperatives.

Following the successful completion of the mission, the pilot, on return to base, exercised his professional discretion to execute a precautionary landing approximately 10 nautical miles from the airfield. This is in accordance with established operational and safety procedures following combat missions. The helicopter has returned to base.

Cristiano Ronaldo Pays Tribute to Messi After Argentina Farewell

Cristiano Ronaldo has offered a public message of respect to longtime rival Lionel Messi following the Argentine’s emotional farewell from international football.

Messi played his final match for Argentina on Tuesday night, scoring once and providing two assists in a 3-0 friendly victory over Benin at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. The 39-year-old, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history, described the occasion as “the saddest day of my career” after more than two decades representing his country.

In a comment on Messi’s Instagram post marking the end of his international journey on Wednesday, Ronaldo wrote: “Leo, so many years defending your country and a story that will live on forever. You have all my respect for everything you’ve achieved with Argentina. A hug.”

The Portuguese star’s words were widely reported on Wednesday, including by Spanish newspaper Marca, which noted that mutual respect has long existed between the two icons despite their intense on-pitch rivalry spanning more than 15 years.

Messi announced his retirement from the Argentina national team in late August, shortly after the side’s 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain. He cited the emotional and physical toll of the tournament, which coincided with the illness and subsequent death of his father, Jorge Messi, as factors in his decision.

Ronaldo and Messi have frequently exchanged words of admiration in recent years, including Ronaldo’s message of support after the death of Messi’s father earlier this year.

Their latest exchange comes as both players, now in the later stages of their careers, continue to draw global attention, Messi with Inter Miami and Ronaldo with Al-Nassr.

The tribute underscores a shared recognition of extraordinary careers defined by excellence, longevity and national service.
