ADC: True Democracy About Justice, Accountability Not Politicians’ Gain

The Kebbi chapter of the African Democratic Congress has described the June 12, 1993, presidential election as a symbol of Nigerians’ struggle for justice, free and fair elections.

A spokesman for the party in Kebbi, Abubakar Atiku-Musa, stated this in a statement on Friday.

He said, “June 12 holds a special place in Nigeria’s democratic history. It symbolises the struggle of the Nigerian people for justice, free and fair elections, and the fundamental right of citizens to freely choose their leaders in an atmosphere governed by the rule of law, peace, and fairness.

“The commemoration of this day as Democracy Day reminds us that democracy is not merely about conducting elections. It is also about good governance, accountability, security, the protection of citizens’ rights, and the promotion of the welfare and prosperity of all people.”

He, however, observed that the nation continued to face significant challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship, a declining standard of living, diminishing public confidence in some state institutions, and the widening gap between political promises and the realities faced by ordinary citizens.

Mr Musa noted that the true essence of June 12 could only be realised when democratic institutions were strengthened, justice was guaranteed for all, and government policies were guided by the needs and aspirations of the people rather than the interests of a privileged few.

According to him, others have raised concerns about budget implementation, alleging that approved plans and projects are not always carried out as intended. He said leaders must continue to protect democracy and remain honest and accountable to citizens.

Mr Musa added that what Nigerians need now “is to strengthen the nation’s democracy” by upholding the country’s constitution and laws.

He added that democracy could only thrive when leaders act in the public interest, respect democratic institutions, and address the real challenges facing the nation.

Democracy Day: Senate President Akpabio Calls For Unity, Resilience, Citizen Participation

The president of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called on Nigerians to embrace unity, vigilance and active participation in nation-building, as the country marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.

Mr Akpabio, who made the call in his Democracy Day message, issued by his Spokesperson, Eseme Eyibo, in Abuja on Friday, described Nigeria’s democratic experiment as a testament to endurance despite years of agitations.

He commended Nigerians for their resilience and support for democracy despite some low moments.

“On behalf of the 10th National Assembly, I congratulate every Nigerian for the sustenance of democracy for close to three decades. Mistakes have been made in the course of this journey, but we will surely get to the desired destination with your support,” he stated.

Mr Akpabio urged Nigerians to continue to believe in democratic governance and not give in to attempts by elements of backwardness to derail the process.

According to him, democracy should extend beyond the conduct of elections and be anchored on accountability, justice, compassion and service to the common good.

Mr Akpabio called on youths to participate actively in the nation’s political process, stressing that the younger generation formed the fulcrum of leadership succession.

“As we commemorate June 12, I wish to encourage the youth not to sit on the fence but be active participants in the nation’s political activities. The youth constitute the fulcrum of those who will succeed us tomorrow.

“Let us therefore rededicate ourselves to the ideals of freedom, transparency and accountable government, social justice and active citizen participation, especially the youth,” he said.

On the current security challenge, the Senate president appealed to Nigerians to unite and cooperate with the government to tame the monster that had befallen the country.

He assured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remained committed to ending insecurity and securing the release of all persons in captivity.

“I urge every Nigerian to support the administration of President Bola Tinubu in his efforts to fight terrorism,” stated Mr Akpaibo. “We understand the pains you are going through, but the government is not resting on its oars and hopefully, we shall overcome this current challenge and all will be well with Nigeria.”

Air Force War College Nigeria Delegation Visits The Brunei Defence Academy And Centre For Strategic And Policy Studies

As part of the ongoing International Study Tour of Air War Course 12/2026, a delegation from the Air Force War College Nigeria visited the Brunei Defence Academy and the Centre for Strategic and Policy Studies, Brunei Darussalam. The engagements were conducted under the theme, “Integrating Emerging Technologies for National Security.”

At the Brunei Defence Academy, the Exercise Director, the Commandant Air Force War College Nigeria, Air Vice Marshal GA Mbaka, paid a courtesy visit to the Commandant of the Academy.

The visit provided an opportunity to discuss areas of mutual interest, particularly in the fields of professional military education, leadership development and institutional cooperation. The delegation also received briefings on the Academy’s mandate and its role in developing military leaders for the contemporary security environment.
