NPF Concludes 3-Day International Youth Day Programme, Adopts Abuja Youth Declaration

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, yesterday, Saturday, 22nd August 2026, participated in the closing ceremony of the three-day International Youth Day 2026 programme in Abuja, where he formally adopted the Abuja Youth Declaration on Peace, Responsible Citizenship and Democratic Participation.

The programme, organised under the National Youth Leadership and Security Initiative of the Nigeria Police Force, was held under the theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” and the campaign, “My Future is Greater Than Political and Digital Thuggery.”

The closing ceremony featured the International Youth Day Honours and Awards Ceremony, the launching of the national campaign against political and digital thuggery and electoral violence, the investiture of National Youth Ambassadors, and the presentation of the book, Esteemed Youths. The adoption of the Abuja Youth Declaration was a major outcome of the three-day engagement.

In his remarks, the IGP said the programme had gone beyond speeches to practical engagement through panel sessions, the walkathon, tree-planting exercise, and other activities aimed at promoting responsibility and action among young Nigerians. He stated that the initiative would continue beyond Abuja, with the Nigeria Police Force taking the conversation to schools, tertiary institutions, NYSC formations, and youth organisations across the country.

The Inspector-General urged young Nigerians to own the commitments contained in the Abuja Youth Declaration and allow them to guide their civic participation, online conduct, and relationship with their communities and the nation at large. He also reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to working with youths as partners in prevention, protection, peaceful democratic participation, and responsible digital citizenship.

In her goodwill message, the National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, urged young Nigerians to reject violence, political thuggery, cybercrime, hate, and misinformation, and to embrace peace, responsibility, and purposeful leadership. She encouraged them to use their voices, ideas, skills, and digital platforms positively, stressing that their future is greater than political and digital thuggery.

The Nigeria Police Force appreciates all government institutions, development partners, private-sector sponsors, facilitators, speakers, volunteers, and youth participants whose contributions ensured the success of the programme.

Umahi, Sanwo-Olu, Abiodun, Others Grace Shekina and Shope’s Wedding in Lagos

It was a celebration of love, family, friendship and distinguished personalities in Lagos on Saturday, August 22, 2026, as Shekina Chidinma Umahi and Shope Alexandra Ayinde were joined in holy matrimony at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Powerlink Chapel, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

Shekina, a niece of the Honourable Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, CON, is the daughter of Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) Pastor Obi Abel Umahi, DSc, OFR, while Shope is the son of Commodore NN (Rtd.) Deacon Adebayo Abidemi Ayinde.

The wedding brought together governors, senior government officials, lawmakers, business leaders, traditional rulers, captains of industry, family members and friends from across the country to celebrate the young couple.

The Honourable Minister of Works, who also serves as the Deputy Director-General of Infrastructure, Mobilization and Sensitization of the 2027 APC Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Engr. David Umahi, CON, was present at the ceremony to celebrate with his niece and the families of the newlyweds and was joined by the Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency Dapo Abiodun, CON; and Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, who chaired the occasion.

In his opening remarks as Chairman of the occasion, Governor Alex Otti described marriage as a lifelong commitment and urged the newlyweds to embrace patience, understanding and tolerance as they begin their journey together.

With humour, the Abia State Governor stressed the permanence of marriage, telling the couple that they should approach their union with a strong commitment to making it work.

“I want to tell you in advance that I won’t be present and as such, I declare that this marriage is indissoluble,” he said.

In separate remarks, the parents of the bride and groom expressed gratitude and joy at witnessing the marriage of their children.

They praised Shekina and Shope for distinguishing themselves through their formative years and into adulthood, describing them as outstanding young people who had continued to make their families proud.

They prayed for God’s guidance, peace, happiness and prosperity in their marriage and wished them a fulfilling life together.

The Umahi family also formally welcomed the couple with the presentation of family gifts.

On behalf of the Umahi family, the Chairman of the Uburu Traditional Rulers Council, HRH Eze Laz Umahi, PhD, presented the gifts to the newlyweds.

The ceremony attracted a gathering of political leaders, statesmen and captains of industry.

Other governors present at the event included the Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru, represented by his deputy, Her Excellency Patricia Obila; Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency Peter Mbah, represented by his deputy, Barr. IGP Disu Highlights NPF’s Efforts on Community Protection and Professional policing in US-Nigeria CPC Meeting

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, represented the Nigeria Police Force at the second United States-Nigeria Country of Particular Concern (CPC) Joint Working Group meeting held on 12th August, 2026, in Washington, D.C., where he highlighted the Force’s contributions to the implementation of the Joint Working Group Roadmap.

The IGP was part of the Nigerian delegation comprising the National Security Adviser, the Honourable Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Interior and Defence, Service Chiefs and Heads of other security and law enforcement agencies. The meeting reviewed progress on the Roadmap for the April to June 2026 reporting period and explored areas for strengthened cooperation.

Presenting the NPF’s contributions, the IGP highlighted sustained counter-kidnapping and anti-banditry operations, strengthened Police presence in vulnerable communities, early-warning mechanisms and measures supporting the protection and safe return of Internally Displaced Persons.

He disclosed that personnel from specialised Police formations were deployed across vulnerable Local Government Areas during the reporting period to reinforce public safety and deter violent extremist and criminal groups. He also noted that the recruitment of 50,000 Police Constables is advancing towards the final pre-training stage, with preparations underway for comprehensive training based on an improved curriculum and international best practices.

The IGP further highlighted strengthened community engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders, stressing the importance of public trust, religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence in achieving sustainable security.

He reaffirmed the NPF’s commitment to lawful and professional investigations, civilian protection, human rights and due process, noting the Force’s continued contribution to Nigeria’s broader counterterrorism and criminal justice framework.

US-Nigeria meeting

The IGP reaffirmed the NPF’s commitment to sustaining its contribution to the Joint Working Group Roadmap through professional policing, community protection, strengthened investigative capacity and support for Nigeria’s broader security and rule-of-law objectives.
