Governor Umo Eno Hails NAF’s Expanded Security Posture In Niger Delta
The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, has applauded the Nigerian Air Force’s (NAF) intensified operational presence in the State, describing it as a strategic boost to peace, investor confidence, and sustainable economic growth.
The Governor made the remarks during the high-impact operational visit of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, to Akwa Ibom State on 30 April 2026.
During a high-level engagement with the CAS, Governor Eno lauded the Nigerian Air Force for its proactive and mission-driven approach to security, noting that “the establishment and operationalisation of the 309 Composite Group, Eket, would significantly deter criminality, enhance the protection of critical national infrastructure, and reinforce stability across the State and the wider Niger Delta region”.

He reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to sustaining collaboration with the NAF, stressing that security remains the bedrock of economic development. “The operationalisation of this Unit is a major boost to peace, stability, and economic activities within Akwa Ibom State and the wider Niger Delta region,” the Governor stated. The visit, which featured strategic engagements with key stakeholders and a comprehensive inspection of facilities at the 309 Composite Group, Eket, underscored the NAF’s intensified posture aimed at neutralising threats, protecting vital economic assets, and enabling sustained growth in the Niger Delta.
In his remarks, the CAS commended the Akwa Ibom State Government for its decisive support in fast-tracking the establishment of the Unit, emphasising that the 309 Composite Group represents a critical forward operating base for enhanced intelligence, surveillance, and rapid response operations. “The establishment of 309 Composite Group is a strategic step towards strengthening security and safeguarding vital economic assets that are central to Nigeria’s prosperity. We are fully committed to leveraging this platform to deliver decisive airpower effects in support of national security objectives,” Air Marshal Aneke stated.
At Eket, the CAS also engaged with the Paramount Ruler, HRM Edidem Charles D. Abia, and other stakeholders, where he called for strengthened civil-military cooperation as a force multiplier in ongoing operations. He stressed that enduring security outcomes are rooted in trust, intelligence-sharing, and community partnership.

Earlier, during an inspection of facilities at the 309 Composite Group, the Air Officer Commanding Mobility Command, Air Vice Marshal MN Onyebashi, affirmed the Unit’s growing operational capacity and readiness to execute assigned missions with precision, assuring that personnel remain fully aligned with the CAS’s directive to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and operational effectiveness.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, today, 30th April 2026, undertook an official visit to Akwa Ibom State, where he paid a courtesy call on the Executive Governor, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, ahead of the passing-out ceremony of retrained Police Constables in Uyo.
The engagement with the State Government focused on strengthening institutional collaboration in support of ongoing policing reforms anchored on professionalism, accountability, and intelligence-led operations.
The Inspector-General of Police reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to building a modern, service-driven institution that prioritizes public trust and operational efficiency.

Governor Umo Eno, in his remarks, welcomed the Inspector-General of Police and commended the Nigeria Police Force for its ongoing reforms aimed at improving professionalism, discipline, and service delivery. He reiterated the State Government’s readiness to continue supporting security agencies in ensuring the safety and well-being of residents.
Subsequently, the Inspector-General of Police presided over the passing-out ceremony of one thousand and sixty-eight (1,068) retrained Police Constables at the Police Mobile Force Base, 26 PMF, Uyo.
Addressing the newly retrained officers, the IGP
emphasized that the exercise was part of a deliberate effort to strengthen operational competence, particularly in weapons handling, discipline, and adherence to established rules of engagement, including Force Order 237. He noted that effective policing requires not only courage but professionalism, restraint, and respect for human rights.
The IGP reiterated the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on misuse of firearms and extra-judicial conduct, stressing that any officer found culpable of such acts will face immediate dismissal and prosecution in accordance with the law.
He further commended the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, for the successful execution of the retraining programme, particularly the inclusion and performance of female officers, describing the initiative as a model for Commands nationwide.

The Inspector-General also acknowledged recent operational successes within the State, including the rescue of kidnapped victims along the Calabar–Oron waterways, noting that such achievements reflect the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and inter-agency collaboration.
The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to building a professional, accountable, and citizen-focused institution, capable of effectively responding to evolving security challenges across the country.

Police, EFCC Rescue 14 Abducted Victims From Calabar-Oron Waterways
The Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has successfully secured the release of fourteen (14) victims abducted by sea pirates along the Calabar–Oron waterways.
The victims were rescued following sustained intelligence-driven operations, robust inter-agency collaboration, and coordinated tactical efforts targeting criminal elements operating within the maritime corridor. Acting on credible intelligence, joint operatives intensified surveillance and conducted targeted operations across identified flashpoints, leading to the safe rescue of all victims without harm.

The rescued victims are currently undergoing medical evaluation and necessary debriefing, after which they will be reunited with their families.

The Akwa Ibom government has activated heightened COVID-19 surveillance following confirmation of a new outbreak in a neighbouring state.

Health commissioner Ekem Emmanuel made this known in a statement in Uyo on Monday.
Mr Emmanuel said Governor Umo Eno directed the ministry to activate heightened surveillance across all entry points, health facilities, and communities to forestall any outbreak.
”Disease surveillance officers and rapid response teams have been placed on red alert to promptly detect and manage any suspected cases. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to public health guidelines.
“Citizens are also advised to observe preventive measures, including regular handwashing with soap and water or the use of alcohol-based sanitisers, and wearing face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces.
“Citizens are also advised to avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals, refrain from handshakes and physical greetings and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty in breathing occur,” he said.
The commissioner urged healthcare workers to maintain a high index of suspicion and adhere strictly to infection prevention and control protocols. He said the ministry would strengthen collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and other relevant partners to ensure effective monitoring and coordinated response.

COVID-19
Mr Emmanuel reassured residents that the government was committed to safeguarding public health. The commissioner urged the public to rely solely on verified information from the Ministry of Health and to avoid spreading unverified reports that could cause unnecessary panic.
Mr Emmanuel said an enquiries desk had been set up at the ministry with designated helplines available to assist members of the public.
