Government grants clemency to 4,000 inmates, saves N1bn in feeding costs says Minister. The Federal Government has pardoned over 4,000 prisoners as part of efforts to decongest correctional facilities, saving N1 billion in feeding expenses, according to the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Speaking at the 5th Ministerial Press Briefing in Abuja, Tunji-Ojo explained that many of the released inmates were detained over minor fines, prompting their swift release.
“We reduced overcrowding in correctional centers by five percent last year. Over 4,000 inmates were freed in a single day after a detailed review revealed they were held for petty fines,” he said.

Crackdown on Illegal Refineries
The minister also revealed that in 2024, the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad dismantled 2,125 illegal refineries and oil dumps nationwide.
Additionally, authorities impounded nearly 205 trucks transporting illegally refined petroleum products, arrested over 700 suspects, and secured 345 convictions, with 187 cases still pending in court.

FG Orders immediate investigation into Kogi jailbreak. The Federal Government has ordered an immediate probe into the jailbreak at Koton Karfe Custodial Centre in Kogi State.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, directed the Acting Comptroller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, to visit the facility and conduct a comprehensive audit to determine the cause of the escape.
In a statement by his media adviser, Babatunde Alao, Tunji-Ojo assured that all fleeing inmates would be recaptured using biometric and technological tracking systems.

Kogi Jailbreak
Meanwhile, Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, described the incident as “unfortunate” and confirmed that security agencies have already rearrested one escapee. He urged the public to report any suspicious individuals and warned against aiding fugitives.
Governor Usman Ododo has also directed security agencies to reinforce measures to prevent future breaches.

Inmates recaptured in Kogi jailbreak, 3 escaped, officer eliminates. Three of the 12 inmates who escaped from Koton Karfe Correctional Centre in Kogi State have been rearrested, the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, Acting Controller General Sly Nwakuche disclosed that one correctional officer was eliminated during the jailbreak.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri confirmed the incident, which occurred on Sunday, March 23, while he was en route to a priests’ retreat. The Church has called for prayers for his safe release.
This marks another abduction of a priest in the area, following a similar incident in 2023.
Police authorities have yet to comment on the development.
