Energy and Maritime Reporters Sets to Reposition Branch, Review Membership in Abuja
The Abuja Branch of the Energy and Maritime Reporters of Nigeria (EMR) has resolved to strengthen members’ participation, deepen professional engagement and review its membership structure as part of efforts to reposition the branch for greater impact.

The resolutions were reached at the branch’s second congress, held online via WhatsApp on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
The meeting, which commenced at 8:30 a.m., was attended by EMR National Chairman, Mr. Martins Ogene; National Secretary, Dr. Seviour Ekpe; Abuja Branch Chairman, Amb. Dotun Roy; Branch Secretary, Queen Nora Inwang; Comrade Dominic Edem; Comrade Idongesit Ekpe and other old and new members of the branch.
Welcoming members to the meeting, the Branch Chairman, Amb. Dotun Roy, appreciated members for their commitment and for making time to attend despite the short notice.
Speaking at the congress, the National Chairman, Mr. Martins Ogene, stressed the importance of unity and collaboration among journalists, noting that the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), professional guilds and other associations provide platforms for journalists to interact and advance their professional interests.
Ogene urged EMR members in Abuja to take advantage of the strategic position of the Federal Capital Territory and the presence of several ministries, departments and agencies responsible for energy and maritime affairs.
“Abuja is the headquarters, and members should take advantage of that opportunity,” he said.
He also charged journalists covering the energy and maritime sectors to provide accurate, balanced and timely reports on developments affecting the Nigerian economy.
According to him, energy and maritime reporting covers critical sectors of the economy and therefore requires journalists to be more proactive, engaging and committed to their beats.
The National Chairman further called on members to cooperate with one another and participate actively in the association’s programmes.
He encouraged members to join the EMR Lounge platform, where internal matters affecting the association would be discussed, while announcing plans by the national body to organise training programmes aimed at improving members’ professional capacity.
Ogene said the benefits of belonging to the association would become more evident when members remained committed and actively participated in its activities.
Also speaking, the National Secretary, Dr. Seviour Ekpe, commended the National Chairman for his remarks and praised the Abuja Branch Executive for convening the congress.
Ekpe described Abuja as a strategic location for journalists covering the energy and maritime sectors because of the concentration of government agencies and institutions in the nation’s capital.
“Abuja does not have all, but it is the centre of Nigeria. There are a lot of agencies in Abuja that have to do with energy and maritime, and members should take advantage of this,” he said.
He proposed that the Abuja Branch organise courtesy visits to relevant energy and maritime agencies in the FCT to establish stronger relationships, improve access to information and enhance members’ professional engagement.
The National Secretary also stressed the need for commitment among members, warning that inactive members could be reviewed and removed from the active membership structure in due course.
Meanwhile, Comrade Dominic Edem called for better identification and interaction among members across the association.
Edem suggested that the names of members from the national body down to the various state branches should be made available on the relevant platforms to facilitate easy identification, communication and professional networking among members.
A major issue discussed at the congress was the need to ensure that the Abuja Branch is made up of active and committed members.
The National Chairman said the branch needed to reduce the number of inactive members and build a smaller but more committed membership structure.
He said the branch should find ways to “trim down the group from 19 members to 10 committed members,” adding that inactive members should exit or be removed from the platform.
As part of efforts to properly identify members and assess their level of commitment, the branch agreed to hold a WhatsApp video meeting for Abuja members and members of the Executive Committee on Saturday.
Members who fail to participate in the video meeting may be asked to leave the group or be removed by the administrators, in line with the resolution reached at the congress.

The proposed list of new Executive Committee members for the Abuja Branch will also be discussed during the Saturday video meeting.
The branch further resolved to hold regular meetings to discuss developments in the energy and maritime industries, as well as professional concerns affecting members.
Members were consequently urged to participate actively in EMR Abuja Branch programmes, support one another professionally and contribute to the growth and development of the association.
The meeting ended at 10:00 p.m., with the Branch Chairman thanking members for their contributions and urging them to remain committed to the objectives and growth of EMR Abuja Branch.

Nigerian Navy Intercepts Illicit Petroleum Products, Suspected Cannabis in Lagos
The Nigerian Navy has intercepted 500 litres of products suspected to be illegally sourced Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and substances suspected to be Cannabis sativa during an operation in Folu Community, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.

The operation was conducted by personnel of Forward Operating Base (FOB) LEKKI on 24 August 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to curb the illegal trade and storage of petroleum products as well as the proliferation of illicit drugs within the Base’s Area of Operations.
The suspects fled the location before they could be apprehended, while the recovered exhibits were secured and conveyed to the Base for further investigation and appropriate action in accordance with established procedures.

NPF Arrest 10 Suspects, Recovers AK-47 Rifle, Ammunition in Firearms Trafficking Operations
The Nigeria Police Force, through operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Force Headquarters, has arrested ten suspects in separate intelligence-led operations targeting criminal networks involved in unlawful possession, trafficking and distribution of firearms across parts of the country.

In one operation conducted across Imo and Rivers States, eight suspects were arrested in connection with a suspected criminal syndicate involved in kidnapping and illegal firearms procurement. The operation led to the arrest of Mohammadu Sani, identified as the principal suspect, who was apprehended on the outskirts of Owerri, Imo State, with an AK-47 rifle and 30 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
Investigation revealed that the suspect had previously operated in Kogi State before relocating to Port Harcourt, where he allegedly commenced efforts to reconstitute his criminal network. Findings further linked members of the syndicate to kidnapping operations in parts of Rivers and Imo States and established the procurement of the recovered firearm through an alleged firearms trafficking intermediary.
In a separate operation targeting a suspected firearms trafficking syndicate in the North-Central region, operatives arrested Yakubu Danladi Pam and Abdulsalam Mohammed Hussain. Recovered from the suspects were one locally fabricated AK-47 rifle, one Type 06 rifle, two magazines and 28 rounds of live ammunition.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspects were involved in the supply, transportation and distribution of firearms across parts of the North-Central and North-Eastern regions.

The Nigeria Police Force has intensified efforts to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicates and further disrupt the illegal movement of firearms used to facilitate violent crimes.

The High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Nigeria, His Excellency Mr Miah Md Mainul Kabir, today reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to deepening defence and maritime security cooperation with the Nigerian Navy in the areas of maritime security, professional training, technology exchange, naval shipbuilding and defence-industrial development.

He made this known during a high-level engagement with the Chief of the Naval Staff, where he underscored the longstanding cordial relations between the two countries and the importance of translating that relationship into practical areas of cooperation.
Responding, the Chief of the Naval Staff appreciated the High Commissioner and his delegation for the visit and highlighted Nigeria’s operational experience in combating piracy and other maritime crimes in the Gulf of Guinea. He noted that such experience provides opportunities for professional exchanges and shared learning, while emphasising the importance of stronger cooperation among regional navies in addressing maritime threats that transcend national boundaries. The CNS also referenced Nigeria’s participation in multinational maritime security initiatives, including engagement with the Combined Maritime Task Force, as a framework that could be leveraged to counter militancy on the maritime border between Myanmar and Bangladesh.
The engagement further explored opportunities for training and professional exchanges, naval technology, shipbuilding and indigenous industrial development. The Nigerian Navy expressed interest in Bangladesh’s garment manufacturing industry, noting it as a potential area for knowledge sharing to support local
production of military uniforms. Discussions also examined prospects for technical cooperation in naval shipbuilding.

The engagement concluded with an invitation for the Chief of the Naval Staff to undertake a visit to Bangladesh, which would provide an opportunity to further advance the areas of mutual interest. The meeting underscores the importance of sustained engagement between the Nigeria Navy and other world navies to strengthen maritime security, develop professional and technical capacity, promote indigenous defence-industrial capabilities, and advance mutually beneficial bilateral relations.
