Buba Marwa: Military Leaders Didn’t Want Tinubu To Become Lagos Governor

Buba Marwa: Military leaders didn’t want Tinubu to become Lagos governor. Buba Marwa, chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), says military leaders tried to prevent President Bola Tinubu from becoming governor of Lagos state. Marwa, former military governor of Lagos from 1996 to 1999, said the military hierarchy wanted to stop Tinubu because of his pro-democracy activism with the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) at the time.

The NDLEA chairman spoke in Abuja on Saturday at the public presentation of Buni Boy, a book authored by the late Niyi Ayoola-Daniels.
He said Lagos residents warmly embraced his leadership and supported his administration, even though they opposed military rule.

The retired brigadier general said the trust Lagos residents placed in him motivated his decision to oversee a transparent, credible democratic election.
“Even though the head of state then, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, did not interfere in my conduct of the governorship election, the military hierarchy did,” Marwa said.

“After seeing the then-Senator Bola Tinubu’s strong campaign and popularity, the military hierarchy instructed me to prevent him from becoming governor because of his pro-democracy activism in NADECO against the military government then.

“But I chose to conduct a free and fair election that produced the most popular candidate as governor of Lagos State. The rest today is history.” Marwa said his 30-year military career further solidified his belief in the country’s unity, adding that the army’s ethos was built around one Nigeria.

“In the army, intermarriage and close fellowship pushed us to look past ethnic lines and stand together as one,” he said. “Wherever I stand in this country, whether among the Ogoni, the Bachama, the Igbo or the Idoma, anywhere at all, I am at home.”

‘TINUBU’S PRO-DEMOCRACY STRUGGLE’
Tinubu joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1991 and actively campaigned for MKO Abiola, the party’s presidential candidate.

In 1992, he was elected to the senate, representing Lagos west district, where he chaired the committee on banking, finance, appropriation, and currency.
Following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, Tinubu became a founding member of the NADECO, a coalition that pushed for the restoration of democratic rule and recognition of Abiola as the rightful winner of the election.

During the struggle, Tinubu and other pro-democracy activists fled into exile, continuing the fight for democracy through NADECO’s international network.

After the military head of state Sani Abacha died in 1998, Tinubu returned to Nigeria and joined politics following the restoration of democracy.

He was elected governor of Lagos state under the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in 1999.

Addressing a distinguished gathering of Air Chiefs, senior military leaders and strategic partners from across the Americas and Africa, the CAS underscored the importance of strengthening global partnerships to address emerging security challenges.

His participation at the high-level forum further highlights Nigeria’s growing recognition as a key contributor to international peace, security and defence cooperation.

Speaking on the symposium’s theme, Air Marshal Aneke observed that today’s evolving security environment, characterised by terrorism, transnational crime, humanitarian crises and natural disasters, requires greater innovation, interoperability and strategic collaboration among Air Forces worldwide.

He noted that the AAAF continues to serve as a vital platform for promoting professional excellence, capacity building and the exchange of best practices across the African continent while fostering stronger partnerships with like-minded organisations such as SICOFAA.

He also identified opportunities for deeper cooperation in joint exercises, air mobility, search and rescue, aerospace medicine, logistics support and disaster response operations, all aimed at enhancing collective operational effectiveness.

The CAS further highlighted the planned African Air Forces Field Training Exercise scheduled for Kenya in 2027 as a landmark initiative that will strengthen readiness for joint security and humanitarian operations involving African Air Forces and selected international partners.

NPF Classifies False Banditry Narrative In Viral Katsina Video, Reaffirms Partnership With Community Security Volunteers

The Nigeria Police Force categorically disclaims the false and misleading narrative accompanying a viral video circulating on social media which alleges that a uniformed police officer was seen interacting with armed bandits in Katsina State.

For the avoidance of doubt, the individuals featured in the video are not bandits. They are duly recognized members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and registered hunters who are actively supporting ongoing security operations in collaboration with security agencies in Musawa and Matazu Local Government Areas of Katsina State.

The video captured a routine interaction between a police officer and these security volunteers as they proceeded to a designated operational area in support of efforts to combat criminality and enhance public safety. Any claim suggesting otherwise is entirely false, malicious, and intended to mislead the public.

The Nigeria Police Force strongly condemns the deliberate distortion of facts and the circulation of misinformation capable of causing public anxiety, undermining confidence in security institutions, and frustrating ongoing security operations.

Members of the public are urged to disregard the misleading claims attached to the video and rely only on information disseminated through official channels of the Nigeria Police Force and other authorized government sources.

The Force warns individuals and groups engaged in the creation, publication, or dissemination of false information capable of prejudicing public peace and security to desist immediately, as appropriate legal action may be taken against violators.

ICPC Secures Conviction Of NSCDC Deputy Commandant For Job Racketeering

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of a Deputy Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr. Idris Barde, for offences bordering on job racketeering.

Mr. Barde, who served as Personal Assistant to the former Commandant General of the NSCDC, Mr. Abdullahi Gana, was prosecuted by the Commission before Justice Ngozika Nwabulu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Kurudu, on a two-count charge.

The charges arose from his receipt of the sum of N4,550,000 (Four Million, Five Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) from one Mr. Igbo Christian Okechukwu under the pretence of securing employment in the NSCDC for seven individuals.

One of the charges reads:
“That you, Idris Barde (M), in the year 2017 or thereabout at Abuja, while being a public officer attached to the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, did accept for yourself the sum of N4,550,000.00 (Four Million, Five Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) from Igbo Christian Okechukwu as an inducement to secure jobs in the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for seven persons and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 18(d) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.”

During the trial, the ICPC tendered compelling documentary and testimonial evidence demonstrating the illicit act.

After evaluating the evidence before the Court, Justice Nwabulu found Mr. Barde guilty and sentenced him to 12 months’ imprisonment, with an option of a N4 million fine.

Reacting to the judgment, the Commission described the conviction as another demonstration of its unwavering commitment to holding public officers accountable for abuse of office and corruption.
