BREAKING: Tinubu Sacks UniAbuja, UNN VCs, Appoints Replacements
President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, dissolved the entire governing council of the Yakubu Gowon University (formerly UniAbuja), and relieved Professor Aisha Maikudi of her duties as its Vice-Chancellor with immediate effect.
“To succeed Maikudi, President Tinubu appointed Professor Patricia Manko as Acting Vice Chancellor at the Yakubu Gowon University for a six-month term,” Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, revealed in a statement he signed on Thursday.
The statement is titled ‘President Tinubu announces leadership overhaul at Federal Universities.’
“She (Prof. Manko) will not be eligible to apply for the substantive Vice Chancellor position when it becomes available,” he added.
Senator Lanre Tejuoso, currently Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of the Yakubu Gowon University.
He will be succeeded in Makurdi by Senator Joy Emordi, now pro-chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education.
In addition, Tinubu has relieved Professor Polycarp Chigbu from his position as Acting Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, before his tenure ends on February 14.
Professor Oguejiofu Ujam has been appointed as his successor for six months and will not be eligible to apply for the permanent position.
The leadership changes at UNN extend to the role of Pro-Chancellor, with Gen. Ike Nwachukwu reassigned to Pro-Chancellor at the University of Uyo.
Tinubu also appointed Olubunmi Ojo as the new Pro-Chancellor of UNN. Previously, Ojo held the same position at the Federal University of Lokoja and the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti.
Meanwhile, Professor Zubairu Abdullahi, currently the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, has been appointed to succeed Ojo at the Federal University of Lokoja.
Tinubu also appointed Senator Sani Stores as the new Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education, succeeding Senator Joy Emordi.
Stores is a Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Additionally, Olugbenga Kukoyi, a current Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has been appointed the new Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.
“All appointments and reassignment decisions are effective immediately,” the presidency said.

President Tinubu emphasised that these changes reflect his administration’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s higher education system through dynamic leadership and accountability.
“The restructuring aims to strengthen governance and academic excellence within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector,” Onanuga concluded.

UniCal suspends nine students for exam malpractice, forgery. The University of Calabar has suspended nine students for alleged examination malpractice and result forgery.
The suspension was announced in a statement by the institution’s registrar, Chukwuka Icha.
Mr Icha said the decision to suspend the students was reached at the 252nd senate meeting following reports from the Ad Hoc Senate Committee on Examination Malpractice and the Senate Students’ Disciplinary Committee.
He said that while five students were suspended for examination malpractice, the other four were found to have submitted forged results to the university.
”After reviewing the reports and recommendations of the committees, the management resolved that the affected students should be suspended for two academic sessions, and the suspension will take effect from the 2024/2025 academic year,” he said.
Those suspended include Akwuba Enestina, 300 Level, Pharmacy; Udom Iboro, 300 Level, Pharmacy; Nwankwo Daniel, 200 Level, Pharmacy; Ore Israel, 500 Level, Pharmacy; and Chisom Ejafa, 500 Level, Pharmacy.

Others are Lazarus Ebogo of the home economics department, Ele Godwin of the department of zoology, Ofem Patrick of the department of science laboratory technology, and Makailu Pamilo of the department of linguistics and communication studies.
Heads of departments, the deans of the affected faculties and the institution’s acting chief security officer have been assigned to ensure full compliance with the suspension order.

Governor Umo Eno has urged the authorities of Akwa Ibom State University to create a department of business and entrepreneurial studies.
Mr Eno made the call at the sixth, seventh and eighth combined convocation ceremony of the university in Mkpat Enin on Saturday.
Represented by his deputy, Akon Eyakenyi, the governor said a viable department of business and entrepreneurial studies would prepare students for a self-reliant life after school.
“We need to prepare our youths for the future by equipping them with the requisite skills to become business owners.
“I urge the university to take this message seriously, let it be a part of the academic expansion programmes. We must be cognizant of today’s reality,” he said.
He said that to succeed in today’s globalised world, one must develop business modules, learn how to market services, and understand the protocols of engagement.
The governor commended the vice-chancellor, Otoabasi Akpan, for the innovative programmes and policies being implemented in the university.

“The establishment of seven new faculties, and the approval of 69 new academic programmes by the Nigeria University Commission is worth commending,” he said.
Mr Eno congratulated the 3,836 graduands of the university for the passion and dedication shown during their respective programmes.
Earlier, Mr Akpan said the university had witnessed remarkable expansion from an initial eight faculties to 14, and from 43 undergraduate programmes to 66.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has inaugurated a-seven man Governing Council for the State -owned University with Senator Udoma Udo Udoma as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council.
The Governor used the opportunity to congratulate His Eminence, Ntenyin (Dr.) Solomon Etuk, JP, CFR-the Oku Ibom Ibibio on his appointment as the Chancellor of the University, as well as Prof. OtoAbasi Akpan as the substantive Vice Chancellor.
Inaugurating the board at Government House Uyo, Governor Eno, commended the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Otobasi Akpan, for purposeful leadership which have earned the institution full accreditation for commencement of a Faculty of Law and other courses.
Represented by Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, the Governor was full of praise for the accreditation of the law faculty of the institution, explaining that the feat was attained due to Prof Akpan’s passionate leadership and collaboration with relevant regulatory and accreditation agencies in the country.

He described the University as one of the most -sought-after institutions by prospective students in the State and indeed the nation and promised to deepen efforts in prioritizing education as a means of social advancement and growth as captured in the Arise Agenda.
He highlighted his administration’s contributions and support to the Institution, which among others include the awards of contract for the construction of internal roads at the main campus, and payment of subvention and bursaries to students in tertiary institutions and others.
