Babangida Reveals Why He Annulled June 12 Election, Fearing Civil War
Babangida reveals why he annulled June 12 election, fearing civil war. The annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election remains one of Nigeria’s most controversial political events, and former military president General Ibrahim Babangida has now shed new light on his reasons for the decision.
Speaking at the launch of his autobiography, A Journey in Service, in Abuja, Babangida revealed that he feared Chief MKO Abiola’s assassination could plunge Nigeria into another civil war.
The high-profile event, held at Transcorp Hilton, saw dignitaries, including President Bola Tinubu, former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, former Heads of State Generals Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar, and several state governors. Industrialists like Alhaji Aliko Dangote and political figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso were also in attendance.
Why I Annulled June 12 – Babangida
Babangida admitted that Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) won the election against Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC). However, he claimed that powerful forces, particularly led by late General Sani Abacha, opposed Abiola’s presidency and could have had him eliminated.
“Unfortunately, the forces gathered against him after the election were so formidable that I was convinced that if he became President, he would be quickly eliminated by the same people who pretended to be his friends,” Babangida wrote in his book. “I was petrified that if Abiola was killed, it could lead to a civil war.”
Babangida described the annulment as a regrettable moment in Nigeria’s history, admitting that the military underestimated the resistance to returning to civilian rule.
Coup Threats and Military Politics
He revealed that opposition within the military made it difficult to sustain the transition to democracy, as many officers were reluctant to give up their positions.
“The military was factionalised between those who wanted to hand over to a civilian government and those who were determined to retain control,” he said.
According to Babangida, the annulment of the election nearly cost him his life. While in Katsina on June 23, 1993, to condole with the Yar’Adua family, he was shocked to hear that the election had been nullified without his direct authorization. “I was alarmed and horrified. I knew I had been outflanked by powerful elements within my government,” he disclosed.
He admitted that he attempted to offer Abiola an interim position as a compromise, but the business mogul rejected it. He also accused Abiola of trusting deceitful ‘friends’ who later worked against him.
Reactions and IBB Presidential Library Launch
President Tinubu, speaking at the event, acknowledged Babangida’s influence in shaping his political career, stating, “Without you, people like me wouldn’t be in politics.” Former President Goodluck Jonathan described Babangida as a charismatic leader who drove infrastructural development in Nigeria.
The event also witnessed the launch of the IBB Presidential Library, which received massive financial support from business moguls. Notable donations included N8 billion from Aliko Dangote, N5 billion from Abdulsamad Rabiu, and N3 billion from General Theophilus Danjuma.
Final Thoughts

Babangida
Babangida concluded by acknowledging that his administration’s actions disrupted Nigeria’s democratic process, but emphasized that the country survived and democracy endured.
“Nigeria’s march to democracy was interrupted, a fact that I deeply regret. But democracy is still alive today – a testament to our resilience.”
As Nigeria continues to reflect on the impact of June 12, Babangida’s revelations provide fresh insight into one of the nation’s most defining political moments.”

Akwa Ibom Indigenes Protest RMAFC Meeting, Warn Against Tampering With State’s Oil Wells
Akwa Ibom indigenes protest RMAFC meeting, warn against tampering with State’s Oil Wells. Akwa Ibom indigenes resident in Abuja on Tuesday stormed the venue of a meeting of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), where the Inter-Agency Technical Committee (IATC) on Disputed/New Oil Wells was sitting, to protest what they described as attempts to reopen a matter already settled by the Supreme Court.
The protesters cautioned that no individual or agency should tamper with Akwa Ibom State’s 76 oil wells, stressing that the ownership of the wells was conclusively determined in favour of the state by the Supreme Court in 2012.
They insisted that any move to revisit the issue through administrative or technical processes would amount to a disregard for the authority of the apex court and could undermine peace in the Niger Delta region.
Akwa Ibom State was formally represented at the IATC meeting by a high-powered delegation comprising leading legal practitioners, government officials and technocrats. Members of the delegation included Paul Usoro, SAN; Assam Assam, SAN; the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Uko Udom, SAN; Uwemedimo Nwoko, SAN; Emmanuel Enoidem, SAN; and a former Attorney-General of Akwa Ibom State.

Osimhen’s Statement Recalling An Inforgettable Moment With Ronaldo
Osimhen’s statement recalling an unforgettable moment with Ronaldo. Victor Osimhen: “Cristiano Ronaldo was at Juventus at the time, we were playing, and we (Napoli) were winning 1-0. I said to him, ‘Cristiano, I want to take a picture with you.’ And he said, ‘Yes, come to the dressing room.’
I immediately went to the dressing room quickly, I didn’t even take off my shoes. I got there in less than five minutes, and guess where he was? In the gym, after playing 90 minutes.
In the dressing room, I met Buffon, who came over and hugged me. Then Buffon said, ‘What do you want?’ I replied, ‘I want to see Cristiano, I’m looking for him.’
Then we both sat and waited outside the gym, just talking. He (Cristiano) didn’t come out for almost 30 minutes, but it was a home game, and I could have stayed there for five hours if I wanted.
I want to tell you the truth, after playing 90 minutes, he… After finishing his hour-long workout at the gym, Buffon invited me to meet him. When we arrived, I was amazed by his physical condition; I thought he looked like a 25-year-old.

Osimhen’s Statement
That’s when he stood up and invited me to take a photo. He asked the physiotherapist to take it. He asked me, “Is that enough?” I said, “I want more.” So I took a selfie with him, after he finished, he said, “Whatever happens, don’t stop, keep going.”
I thanked him, shook his hand, and then I went to call my friends. I told them that Cristiano and I are not on the same level (laughs). He has talent and works incredibly hard, which is why Cristiano Ronaldo is such a great inspiration to so many of us.
I wanted a photo with him, and I didn’t mind losing 10-0; I wanted that photo with the best”

Salvation Is Not Just Mercy, What Then Is Salvation In The Life Of A Believer: Dr. Damina
Salvation Is Not Just Mercy, What Then Is Salvation In The Life Of A Believer: Dr. Damina
Salvation is not just mercy, what then is Salvation in the life of a believer. Many believers think salvation simply means that God decided to forgive their past and give them another chance. But the Bible presents salvation as something far deeper than mercy.
You did not only receive forgiveness; you received a new birth. John tells us that everyone who receives Christ is born of God. Salvation is not joining a church or turning over a new leaf, it is divine life being imparted into a human being.
“Salvation It Is a New Identity”
Because you are born of God, your identity has changed completely. Second Corinthians 5:21 declares that in Christ we are made the righteousness of God. This means righteousness is not something you struggle to achieve; it is who you now are. God did not improve the old you. He created a new you in Christ.
This reality is not something you are waiting to experience in the future. Scripture says, “Now are we the sons of God,” and that we have already been translated into the kingdom of His dear Son. The transfer has already taken place. Salvation is not a promise you are hoping will happen one day; it is a present reality you are living in today.

Salvation Is Not Just Mercy
Because of this new birth, you now live from a new nature. If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. God has given us eternal life, and that life is in His Son, and Christ lives in you. This means God’s own life has become your life.
Salvation, therefore, is not God showing you pity from a distance. It is God sharing His very life with you. You are no longer who you used to be; you are who Christ is in you.
