Atiku Reveals Why He Failed To Pick Wike As Running Mate In 2023

Atiku reveals why failed to pick Wike as running mate in 2023. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has opened up on why he failed to pick former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike as his running mate in 2023.

Recalls that Wike lost the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential ticket for the 2023 election to Atiku.

There were high expectations that Wike would deputize the former VP in the election, but he picked former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa instead.

Many party stakeholders believe that the decision birthed the present face-off between Atiku and Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

In a yet-to-be-aired interview for a television show, Untold Stories, with Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie, scheduled for broadcast today, Wednesday, Atiku recalled how party leaders accused him of not consulting widely before picking former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi as his running mate in 2019.

“They said I did not consult with the party enough. So in 2023, I threw the whole thing to the party. I said, ‘Okay, set up a committee and recommend three people for me to pick as a running mate”, he said.

The former VP noted that the committee submitted three names with Ifeanyi Okowa as the first choice, Wike as the second, and former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel as the third.

“So I picked number one,” he said, adding that his decision not to pick Wike was simply because he was the second choice on the list.

However, Atiku, who had run for the presidency a record six times, said he had no regrets about not picking Wike.

“No, not at all,” he said.

“We will work assiduously to promote rural governance, service delivery to improve livelihoods and enhance the overall well-being of our people,” ALGON’s national president, Bello Lawal, said in a felicitation message to the Muslim faithful in commemoration of  2025 Eid-el-Fitr in Abuja on Sunday.

Mr Lawal prayed that Allah brings comfort, relief, and prosperity to millions of homes and families of Muslims.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that their voices are heard and their needs are met. Our advocacy for good governance and sustainable development in the LGAs will continue to remain part of our priority.

“I appreciate the unwavering faith and resilience of our Muslim brothers and sisters,  who have persevered through the trials of fasting and spiritual reflection,” he said.

The president said ALGON could not ignore the economic hardship and challenges that many Nigerians are facing, including Muslim brothers and sisters.

According to him, the struggles to make ends meet, the empty stomachs and the unimaginable hardships are a stark reality that we must confront together.

He added that the challenges were particularly pronounced in local governments and area councils where poor farmers resided and jobless Nigerians struggled to survive amidst numerous existential challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, and drug/substance abuse.

“Once again, Eid Mubarak! and may Allah’s blessings be upon you now and forever,” he said.

Enugu Governor Mbah Pledges 24-Hour Service For New PHCs

Enugu Governor Mbah pledges 24-hour service for new PHCs. He urged the people of Emene to take ownership of the facility and ensure its continued functionality.

Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu has pledged 24-hour services for the newly built 260 Type Two Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the state to improve healthcare delivery.

Mr Mbah made this announcement during his supervisory visit to the newly completed Emene PHC on Sunday in Enugu.

His administration is constructing 260 Type Two PHCs across the state with some already completed and others in progress.

Emene, located in the Enugu East Local Government Area, was one of the PHCs visited by the governor.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring these facilities offered round-the-clock services.
“Each Type Two PHC will have 24-hour electricity, powered sustainably by renewable energy.

“There will also be staff quarters to ensure healthcare officers are available to meet the people’s health needs without delay, along with access to water, sanitation, and hygiene,” he said.

Mr Mbah further assured the people of Emene that a Type Three healthcare facility would be built in the area to complement the Type Two PHC, catering to the community’s needs due to its population density.

The governor explained that the initiative was prompted by alarming statistics on maternity and under-five mortality rates, which he described as unacceptable.

“We needed to act quickly, and this is why we’re focused on building functional healthcare facilities across both urban and rural areas,” Mbah emphasised.

Additionally, the governor revealed that similar interventions were ongoing in secondary healthcare facilities, with the renovation of 22 cottage and general hospitals.

He also mentioned plans for a world-class 300-bed international hospital in the state.

“We will attract top-notch medical professionals to provide world-class healthcare services to Enugu people,” Mr Mbah assured.

Mr Mbah also commended the Enugu East chairman, Beloved-Dan Anike, for registering 5,000 residents for universal healthcare insurance and encouraged other local government chairmen and state civil servants to follow suit.

Dr Chukwumuanya Igboekwu, zonal coordinator of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the South-East, lauded Mr Mbah for revitalising the state’s PHCs and investing in the economic prosperity of the people.

He encouraged the governor to prioritise universal healthcare coverage as an investment that would benefit the state.

Dr Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku, executive secretary of the Enugu State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, described Mr Mbah’s interventions in primary healthcare as life-saving and radical.

She noted that the Emene PHC had already registered 140 residents and facilitated the delivery of two babies, named after the governor, within three weeks of operation.
