Akwa Ibom LG Chairman Reaffirms Commitment To Security, Seeks Police Support
Akwa Ibom LG chairman reaffirms commitment to security, deeks police support. The Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr Uwemedimo Udo has reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to supporting the Nigeria Police in maintaining peace and order within the metropolis.
Speaking during a familiarisation visit by the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, on Tuesday March 11, 2025 in his office, the Chairman expressed gratitude for the CP’s engagement with stakeholders, describing it as a proactive step in strengthening security operations.
He commended the police for their continued collaboration, noting that the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) within the Uyo metropolis have been highly supportive.
However, he raised concerns over certain security and social issues affecting residents, particularly the activities of scavengers who remove manhole covers, mostly on Sundays, posing risks to road users.
On improving transportation management, Dr Udo announced that Uyo Local Government is rehabilitating the central motor park at Mbiabong Etoi and called on the police to assist in enforcing the relocation of motorists once the facility is completed.

Police
In response, CP Baba Azare assured that the police would continue to collaborate with the local government to ensure public safety. He also reiterated plans to visit public schools within the city center, especially Government Technical College, Ewet Offot, Christian Secondary School and Uyo High School and engage with the Principals to address social issues affecting the students.
The Chairman commended the CP for his leadership and reaffirmed the Council’s readiness to work closely with the police to maintain law and order in Uyo.

The complainant accused Halima Umar, Aisha Umar, and Bilkisu Umar for allegedly making defamatory remarks about her, particularly regarding her marital status.
“They said I am living alone despite being a married woman,” she told the court.
She further alleged that the defendants harass her nine-year-old son, scaring him away and beating him whenever he goes outside to play.
She pleaded, “We have tried to settle the matter at home, but they refuse to stop. I want this honourable court to intervene and grant me justice.’’ Ms Halima, mother of Aisha and Bilkisu, who spoke in their defence, denied the allegation.

Shari’a Court
She claimed that the complainant was the first to insult her children, calling them prostitutes, and they only retaliated. She also told the court that both the complainant’s son and her own children were underage.
The Judge, Kabir Muhammad asked the defendants whether they had witnesses, to which they responded in the affirmative.
The judge subsequently referred the case to the police for further investigation and adjourned the hearing until March 26.
