IGP Disu Receives NIPR Delegation on Strategies to Strengthen Public Trust

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, today, Tuesday, 15th September 2026, received a delegation of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), led by its President and Chairman of Council, Dr. Ike Neliaku, fnipr, on a courtesy visit to the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The NIPR President commended the IGP’s professional accomplishments and briefed him on Nigeria’s hosting of the 2026 World Public Relations Forum and Africa Charter Forum at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. The Forum is expected to attract more than 3,000 delegates from 126 member countries of the Global Alliance for Public Relations.

The delegation sought the support of the Nigeria Police Force for security planning and coverage during the Forum, invited the Inspector-General of Police to serve as a keynote speaker, and encouraged police officers to participate as registered delegates.

In his remarks, the IGP noted that the Nigeria Police Force and the NIPR share a common responsibility to build public confidence through professionalism, transparency, fairness and effective communication. He emphasized that every police officer is an image-maker of the Force, as the daily conduct of personnel directly shapes public perception of policing.

The Inspector-General reiterated the Force’s commitment to policing by consent and a service-oriented policing culture founded on professionalism, empathy, accountability and respect for human rights. He called for NIPR support in providing specialized communication training for police personnel and developing a coherent messaging framework to better project the sacrifices, dedication and contributions of police officers to public safety and national security.

Peter Obi Tells UNN to Release His Academic Records

2027 NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has asked the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to release his academic records following reports of a legal action seeking Certified True Copies of his university certificates and other admission records.

Obi, in a statement on Tuesday on X, said he had no objection to the release of his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, which he said was awarded by the university in 1984, as well as other academic records relating to his admission and studies at the institution.

His statement followed reports circulating on social media concerning a legal action by an individual or group seeking CTCs of his degree certificate and other academic credentials.

“I wish to state clearly that I have absolutely no objection to the release of these records,” Obi said.

He called on the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to make his academic certificates, records and other official documents available upon legitimate request and within the limits permitted by law.

“I respectfully request that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, within the limits permitted by law, make available, upon legitimate request, my academic certificates, records, and other official documents relating to my admission and studies at the University,” he said.

Obi added that he had no objection to other educational institutions he attended, both within and outside Nigeria, releasing his academic records in accordance with applicable laws and procedures.

He said he believed in transparency and accountability, particularly for people seeking public office, but urged that scrutiny be conducted fairly and lawfully.

“I believe strongly in transparency and accountability, particularly for those who seek the privilege of public office. Public scrutiny must, however, be fair, lawful, and applied consistently to everyone who seeks to lead our nation,” he said.

Obi, who is seeking to contest the 2027 presidential election, said he welcomed legitimate public interest in his background, qualifications and record.

“As a presidential candidate seeking the trust of Nigerians to lead our country, I welcome legitimate public interest in my background, qualifications, and record. I am prepared to subject myself to the level of scrutiny that should reasonably be expected of anyone seeking the highest office in our country,” he said.

He also challenged other presidential aspirants to make their educational qualifications and relevant records available for public scrutiny.

“I encourage every presidential candidate to make their educational qualifications and relevant records available for legitimate public scrutiny,” Obi said.

He said such scrutiny should be viewed as an opportunity to strengthen public confidence and promote accountability rather than as an attack.

“Doing so should not be regarded as an inconvenience or an attack. Rather, it is an opportunity to strengthen public confidence, promote accountability, and rebuild the trust of Nigerians in those who seek to govern them,” he said.

Obi said leadership should reflect the values expected of the society the country seeks to build, including transparency, integrity, accountability and respect for institutions.

“I therefore welcome the scrutiny of my academic background and remain committed to the principle that those who ask Nigerians for their trust must also be willing to earn that trust through openness and accountability,” Obi said.

Nigeria Police Force Debunk Fake Statement on Training of 50,000 New Constables

The Nigeria Police Force has disclaimed a fake press statement circulating widely on social media, which claimed that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, had ordered the commencement of training for 50,000 newly recruited police constables.

The Force, in a disclaimer issued on Friday, said the document was not issued or authorised by any of its organs, despite being packaged to bear the letterhead of the Nigeria Police Force and the name of the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu.

The forged statement, which had been making the rounds on WhatsApp and other platforms, was titled, “IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu Directs Commencement Of Training For 50,000 Newly Recruited Police Constables.”

It claimed that the IG had directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Department of Training and Development to make arrangements for the training of the recruits in line with approved standards, with emphasis on discipline, professionalism, integrity, human rights and effective policing.

The fake release further claimed that successful candidates should begin checking the official police recruitment portal from Monday, September 14, 2026, for information on their allocated training institutions and dates of resumption.

It also purportedly quoted the IG as expressing appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his support in tackling insecurity and strengthening the country’s security architecture.

But debunking the document, the Force said, “The Nigeria Police Force disclaims the purported Press Release titled, ‘IGP OLATUNJI RILWAN DISU DIRECTS COMMENCEMENT OF TRAINING FOR 50,000 NEWLY RECRUITED POLICE CONSTABLES,’ currently in circulation and bearing the name and designation of the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, anipr.”

The Force cautioned members of the public, especially candidates seeking to join its ranks, against falling for the document, insisting that only its verified channels should be trusted.

It said, “Members of the public, particularly Police recruitment candidates, are advised to disregard its contents and rely only on information published through the official Police recruitment portal and verified NPF communication channels.”

The Force also revealed that it had commenced a manhunt for those behind the fabrication and distribution of the false statement, warning that they would face legal consequences once apprehended.

It said, “The Force is currently on the trail of the persons responsible for generating and circulating the false document and will take appropriate legal action against those found culpable.”

The disclaimer comes amid a spate of fake recruitment-related statements attributed to security agencies, which have continued to mislead unsuspecting job seekers and members of the public.
