Abuja Residents Accuse AEDC Of Discriminatory Power Supply

Abuja residents accuse AEDC of discriminatory power supply. The residents alleged that AEDC is giving preference to consumers on Band A and neglecting those on other bands.

Many residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Bands B to E have alleged discriminatory supply of electricity to their homes and business premises.

According to them, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) is giving preference to consumers on Band A and neglecting those on other bands.
Consumers residing in Kubwa, Kuje, Dutse, and Gwagwalada made the allegation in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Sunday.

They said the development had led to an epileptic power supply to those on other bands.

Erica Ekama, a civil servant and resident of Kubwa, said that from her investigation, she learnt that AEDC was concentrating more on Band A customers.

“For me, I think AEDC should put all consumers on Band A, instead of putting some on Bands B, C, D, and so on, and see if they will not pay for Band A.

“Many of us not on Band A feel that we are being discriminated against,” she said.

Joshua Okon, a civil servant also residing in Kubwa, said the government should focus on providing a reliable power supply to consumers instead of putting them on different bands.

He said that instead of concentrating only on those on Band A, electricity should be supplied to every household in the country, irrespective of where one resides.

Ijeoma Okafor, a resident of Kuje, said she was on Band B and corroborated what Mr Okon said.

Ms Okafor said that in Kuje, AEDC does rationing of power supply, adding that even on days when they were supposed to have a supply, there would be no light until very late at night.

“There should be inclusive power distribution for all residents, whether Band A or E,’’ she said.

Amos Osagie, a resident of Dutse, emphasised that consumers should pay based on the units consumed, not the number of hours that power was supplied.

“Government should find a way of providing a reliable and steady power supply to all Nigerians, and the tariff should be uniform, not satisfying some and leaving others unsatisfied,’’ he said.
Chika Okonji, also residing in Dutse, wants the price of electricity reviewed downward to create an equal tariff for all consumers.

Mr Okonji said a situation where some had a power supply for close to 20 hours a day and others don’t get it for more than two to five hours should be looked into.

Timothy Akpan, also residing in Dutse, stated that consumers on other bands were suffering due to a lack of a constant power supply.
Mr Akpan urged the government to stop the preference being given to consumers on Band A and implement a uniform tariff for all citizens.

Iguodala Amah, who resides in Gwagwalada, said that if the government decides to move all consumers to Band A, it would be the right step, provided the power supply is stable and consistent.
Under the existing framework, Band A customers, who are guaranteed 18 to 20 hours of electricity daily, pay N209.5 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), while Band B customers pay N63 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

Customers on Band C are expected to have 12 hours daily and pay between 45 per kWh and 47 per kWh, while those on D have a minimum of eight hours daily and pay between 32 per kWh and 43 per kWh.

Consumers on Band E get a power supply for a minimum of four hours daily and pay between 32 per kWh and 43 per kwh.

Obi, Amaechi, Others Meet In Abuja, Discuss Nigeria’s Democratic Future

Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation, on Saturday hosted Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), and other opposition leaders at his Abuja residence.

Victor Umeh, senator representing Anambra central, Achike Udenwa, former governor of Anambra; and Victor Oganku were also at the meeting.

TheCable understands that discussions by the politicians centred on strengthening the opposition front and Nigeria’s democratic future.

Amaechi, Obi and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar are members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and are eyeing the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.

The former minister contested the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary and came second behind President Bola Tinubu, who won the party’s ticket.

In March, Bolaji Abdullahi, national publicity secretary of the ADC, said the party was working to adopt a consensus approach in selecting its presidential candidate for the 2027 poll.

Abdullahi said the party had the options of direct primaries and consensus for electing its presidential candidate, adding that indirect primaries were “no longer on the table”, as stipulated in the amended Electoral Act.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, Amaechi said he has positioned himself as a viable contender for the next presidential race on the ADC platform.

Amaechi rejected the call for a consensus arrangement within the ADC ahead of the 2027 poll, insisting that aspirants must be allowed to test their popularity at the ballot.

He said Nigerians are yearning for competent leadership to address economic hardship and insecurity.

The former governor of Rivers, however, said he would support Abubakar if the former vice-president emerges as the party’s standard-bearer for the 2027 presidential poll.

FG Warns Against Illegal Use Of Ambassador Title, Fake Diplomatic Identities

President Bola Tinubu-led federal government has warned against the rising abuse of diplomatic titles in Nigeria, particularly the illegal use of the designation “Ambassador” by unauthorised individuals and groups.

The warning was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, in Abuja.

“Some of the persons conferred illegally with the Ambassadorial titles unfortunately parade themselves as such in official communications and even in engagements with foreign embassies in Nigeria which has caused serious embarrassment to the federal government.

“The Ministry warns that individuals parading themselves as “Ambassadors” based on such deceitful conferment are engaging in impersonation, which is a criminal offence and therefore strongly cautions all persons involved in such illegalities or parading themselves as Ambassadors to desist forthwith,” the statement said.

The government also raised alarm over the use of fake diplomatic passports, identity cards, vehicle number plates, and other materials bearing the insignia of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by impostors.

According to the statement, some of those involved in the practice go as far as parading themselves as ambassadors in official correspondence and in dealings with foreign missions in Nigeria, a development it said has embarrassed the country.

It, however, stressed that only the president and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has the constitutional authority to appoint and accredit ambassadors for Nigeria, adding that no individual, group, or organisation has the power to confer diplomatic titles.
