NNPC Ltd, Security Agencies Deepen Collaboration Against Energy Infrastructure Vandalism
…As Joint Taskforce Visit Pipeline Theft Site in FCT
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) through
the Industry Wide Security Architecture (IWSA) and Nigerian Pipelines &
Storage Company (NPSC) in collaboration with the Office of the National
Security Adviser (ONSA) Special Prosecution Team (SPT), the Federal Capital
Territory (FCT) Police Command, the Nigerian Army and other security
stakeholders, on Tuesday conducted a joint inspection of a vandalized
section of the NPSC crude oil pipeline at Pai Community in Kwali Area
Council of the FCT, Abuja.
The high-level inspection was undertaken to assess the extent of damage
to critical national asset, advance ongoing investigations, and reinforce
coordinated efforts to combat economic sabotage and safeguard Nigeria’s
strategic energy infrastructure.
The visit followed the arrest of three suspected pipeline vandals in the Piri
and Pai communities through a joint operation involving the ONSA Special
Prosecution Team, the FCT Police Command, and the NNPC Ltd’s Industry-
Wide Security Architecture (IWSA).
NPSC, a subsidiary of NNPC Ltd, owns more than 5,000 km of crude oil and
petroleum products pipeline network. Pipeline theft across NPSC’s network
has been on the increase since 2024. Well-equipped criminals disguising as
“NNPC/Federal Government Taskforce for Recovery of Abandoned
Pipelines” connive with locals to dig out and steal those pipelines.
In 2025, a total of 19 cases were reported with about 9km pipeline section
stolen along Enugu-Makurdi-Yola and between Piri & Izom along Warri –
Kaduna pipeline corridors.
So far in 2026, five cases were reported at Piri-
Kwali & Gwagwalada, along Warri-Kaduna crude oil pipeline segment and
at Badanga, along Jos-Gombe pipeline corridor.
Speaking during the visit, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Engr.
Bashir Bayo Ojulari, represented by the Chief Interface Officer, NNPC Ltd.,
Dahiru Sani-Gwarzo, described the arrests as an important step in a broader
effort to dismantle the criminal networks responsible for attacks on the nation’s oil and gas infrastructure.
“The industry-wide security architecture has been actively pursuing criminal
elements involved in the sabotage of our energy infrastructure. Those
apprehended are only a small part of a larger network.
Our focus remains
on identifying and bringing to justice the masterminds and sponsors
behind these criminal activities. Beyond the significant economic losses
they cause, such acts undermine national development, energy security
and investor confidence.
We will continue to work closely with our security
partners to ensure these crimes are decisively addressed,” he said.
Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi,
stated that the operation demonstrated the resolve of security agencies to
protect critical national infrastructure and dismantle criminal syndicates
involved in pipeline vandalism.
He disclosed that the suspects were apprehended following intensive
intelligence gathering, surveillance operations and targeted patrols after
reports of interference with sections of the pipeline. According to him,
investigations have already generated valuable leads regarding the
sponsors and receivers of the vandalized materials, adding that all
individuals connected to the crime would be identified and prosecuted in
accordance with the law.
Also speaking, the Director of Energy Security at ONSA, Mr. Goodluck Ebele,
called on Nigerians to support security agencies with timely and credible
information that could assist in preventing pipeline vandalism and other
acts of economic sabotage.

NNPC Ltd
He emphasized that public vigilance and
cooperation remain critical to the protection of national assets and
strengthening of Nigeria’s energy security.
Representing the Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. J.O. Ajongbo reaffirmed the
military’s commitment to working with NNPC Ltd. and other security
agencies to safeguard oil and gas infrastructure across the country.
Similarly, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum
Resources (Upstream), Hon. Sesi Whingan, pledged continued legislative
support to strengthen deterrence against pipeline vandalism through
enhanced legal and regulatory measures.

ICPC Chairman Calls For Dismantling Of Corruption Infrastructure Powering Wildlife Trafficking At Global Crime Commission In Vienna
ICPC Chairman Calls For Dismantling Of Corruption Infrastructure Powering Wildlife Trafficking At Global Crime Commission In Vienna
The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, has called for a strategic shift in the global fight against environmental crime, arguing that wildlife trafficking must be treated as a form of organized financial crime rather than a mere conservation issue.
Speaking at the 35th Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), Dr. Aliyu emphasized that the survival of wildlife trafficking networks is fundamentally tied to the “enabling environment” created by corruption.
He noted that illicit actors rely on bribery at ports, the manipulation of customs documentation, and the abuse of export permits to move products across borders.

“Wildlife trafficking survives not simply because criminal networks are sophisticated, but because corruption creates the enabling environment through which illicit actors move products, money, documents, and influence,” Dr. Aliyu stated.
He described a complex “ecosystem of vulnerabilities” involving transportation systems, financial structures, and enforcement agencies.
In a significant policy announcement, the Chairman revealed that the ICPC has established a dedicated unit focused specifically on environmental crime investigations.
This move represents a strategic decision to accord environmental crime the same level of priority historically reserved for money laundering and terrorism financing.
Dr. Aliyu outlined that effective investigations must simultaneously target three critical areas:
The Product: The physical illicit goods.
The Money: Asset tracing and suspicious transaction analysis.
The Corruption Enablers: Identifying the officials and systems that facilitate the trade.
The Chairman stressed the importance of applying advanced analytical methodologies such as link analysis, digital evidence exploitation, and financial profiling to dismantle the criminal architecture behind wildlife shipments.
He further highlighted the success of international partnerships, specifically commending the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) UK for their collaborative efforts with the ICPC in strengthening institutional responses.

ICPC
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Aliyu called for the urgent strengthening of corruption-risk prevention mechanisms within customs, licensing, and border institutions.
“If corruption is the lubricant of wildlife trafficking networks, then integrity, intelligence, and interagency cooperation must become the tools through which those networks are dismantled,” he declared.

How Tinubu’s Concrete Road Helped Avert Tragedy In Delta Aircraft Incident
How Tinubu’s Concrete Road Helped Avert Tragedy In Delta Aircraft Incident
On Wednesday, June 10, a Nigerian aircraft developed problems while trying to land at Asaba Airport in Delta State. Unable to complete its landing at the airport, the aircraft eventually landed on a concrete road near Ogwashi-Uku.
What could have ended in tragedy is now a story of survival. All crew members on board escaped without injury.
As aviation authorities investigate the incident, many Nigerians have pointed to an important lesson: good infrastructure can make a difference when it matters most.
Eereporter.com
The road on which the aircraft landed provided a stable surface during a critical emergency. While roads are primarily built for vehicles, this incident points at the importance of investing in quality and durable infrastructure. It is how well-constructed roads can deliver value beyond their intended purpose and, in unexpected situations, contribute to safety and help avert disaster.
This is one of the reasons the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has continued to promote the use of concrete pavement on major roads across the country. Concrete roads are designed to be stronger, more durable, and able to withstand heavy pressure over a long period.
In almost every parts of Nigeria, several road projects are being constructed or reconstructed using concrete technology under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Works led by Senator Engr. David Umahi.
The Asaba incident serves as a reminder that infrastructure is not just about transportation. Well-built roads support economic growth, improve connectivity, enhance safety, and in rare situations like this, can help prevent a bad situation from becoming a disaster.
