Immunity Ends Now, No Badge Is A License To Kill, Says IGP Disu

The Nigeria Police Force, Akwa Ibom State Command, today, 30th April 2026, successfully passed out 1,068 retrained Police Constables at the Police Mobile Force Base, 26 PMF, Uyo, with the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, issuing a stern nationwide warning that the era of professional recklessness and impunity is definitively over.

Speaking at the ceremony, the IGP declared that the retraining exercise was not merely ceremonial but a fundamental proclamation of a new professional dawn for the Force. He emphasized that an unskilled officer with a gun is a danger to the public, while a skilled and disciplined officer is a true guardian of the people.

In his keynote address, the IGP lauded the Akwa Ibom State Command for pioneering the comprehensive retraining of female police officers in arms handling last year, noting that gender is no barrier to competence. He reiterated that Force Order 237 remains binding, stressing that firearms shall only be used as a last resort, proportionately, and strictly within the bounds of the law.

Reiterating his national broadcast of 29th April 2026, IGP Disu stated:

“Impunity ends now. Any officer who misuses his weapon, who kills a citizen without lawful justification, will be dismissed and prosecuted. Not transferred. Not queried. Not redeployed. No badge is a license to kill. No uniform is a shield from justice.”

The IGP further warned against extortion, reporting to duty under the influence of alcohol, and reckless use of firearms, promising summary dismissal and criminal prosecution for any violator.

He charged the newly retrained constables to carry their weapons with pride but restraint, wear their uniforms with dignity, and treat citizens with respect, noting that “the real examination begins tomorrow, when you return to the streets.”

The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, in his remarks, disclosed that the retrained personnel include a specially selected cohort for the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), created in line with the IGP’s directive to serve as a strategic strike force against violent crimes across the State.

CP Azare also highlighted key operational successes recorded by the Command, including the safe evacuation of explosive devices at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre and the rescue of kidnapped victims along the Calabar–Oron waterways through seamless inter-agency collaboration.

Force Leadership Orders Dismissal, Prosecution Of Officers Involved In Effurun Shooting

The Nigeria Police Force hereby provides an update on the disciplinary actions taken following the fatal shooting incident of 26th April 2026 in Effurun, Delta State, which resulted in the death of Mr Mene Ogidi.

Sequel to the earlier directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, all officers connected to the incident were immediately withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where they were subjected to expedited disciplinary proceedings.

The Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), alongside other internal disciplinary processes, has concluded its review. Findings established unequivocally that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms. His actions were unlawful, unprofessional, and a clear betrayal of the oath to protect life and uphold the law.

Consequently, the FDC has recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers found culpable. The Inspector-General of Police has approved the recommendations and forwarded same to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.

Upon completion of the administrative procedures, the affected officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution for their roles in the extrajudicial shooting.

The Inspector-General of Police reiterates, in the strongest terms, that the Nigeria Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions and abuse of power. No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.

The IGP extends his deepest and most solemn condolences to the family of the deceased, Mr Mene Ogidi. He acknowledges the pain and loss suffered and assures the family that this tragic incident will not be treated lightly.
