Government Confirms Nigeria Imports 25M Litres Of Petrol Daily, Bans 60,000-Litre Tankers
Government confirms Nigeria imports 25m litres of petrol daily, bans 60,000-litre tankers. The Federal Government has revealed that Nigeria consumes 50 million litres of petrol daily, with local refineries supplying half of the demand, while the remaining 25 million litres are imported.
Speaking after a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, Ogbugo Ukoha, Executive Director of Distribution Systems, Storage, and Retailing Infrastructure at NMDPRA, explained that importation is necessary to prevent fuel scarcity. He noted that domestic refining companies are not involved in fuel importation.
Additionally, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has banned 60,000-litre capacity tankers from transporting petrol and other petroleum products starting March 1, 2025.

NARTO
Despite protests from truck owners, the government insists the ban is necessary due to the rise in tanker fires and damage to roads caused by these high-capacity trucks. The National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) had warned that the policy could result in over N300 billion losses from the 2,000 affected trucks.
Ukoha also announced that by Q4 2025, trucks exceeding 45,000 litres will also be restricted from transporting petroleum products.
