Akpabio, Dep Speaker Kalu, Others Celebrates UniCal 50th Anniversary
Akpabio, Dep Speaker Kalu, others celebrates UniCal 50th Anniversary. It was indeed a moment of deep reflection and immense pride to return to my alma mater, the great University of Calabar, for its 50th Anniversary and 37th Convocation Lecture, alongside 70 of my esteemed coursemates—the Class of 1998, The Golden Ones.
Also in attendance at this great event was the Senate President, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCON a proud alumnus of this institution, Chancellor of the University, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, my dear colleagues from the National Assembly alongside other eminent men and women.
I had the distinct honour of delivering the convocation lecture at this epoch-making event, titled “Our Gown in Town and in Cyberspace: Sustainable and Human-Centered Education, The Mandate of Our Universities, 2025-2075.”
In my address, I highlighted the urgent need to align education with innovation, real-world application, and national development.
I also emphasized the necessity for our universities to move beyond theory and drive tangible, real-world impact.
Education is not merely about acquiring knowledge; it is about applying it to shape the future. If our universities fail to adapt, we risk producing graduates unprepared for the world they will inherit.
I extend my sincere gratitude to my esteemed classmates who found it worthy to join me in this historic moment. Their constant support, love, and prayers have been deeply felt and appreciated.
The path forward is clear: education must be the engine of national transformation, innovation must serve society, and progress must uplift all. This is our generational mandate, to build a future where education is not just a ladder for individual success but the foundation for national prosperity.

Akpabio, Dep Speaker Kalu
I call on policymakers, educators, entrepreneurs, and alumni to rise to the challenge. Let us not wait for the future; let us summon it with bold action.
Expand industry partnerships, fund research that addresses Nigeria’s greatest challenges, and bridge the divide. Above all, let us never lose sight of the people behind the progress.
Deputy Speaker House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu.

Educationists Yakubu-Oyinloye Advocate Adequate Funding To Tackle Out-Of-School Menace
Educationists Yakubu-Oyinloye advocate adequate funding to tackle out-of-school menace. Segun Olawole, an engineer, told journalists that tackling out-of-school syndrome in Nigeria would require a multi-faceted approach.
An educationist, Tokunbo Yakubu-Oyinloye, has called on the federal and state governments to establish more schools to accommodate more out-of-school children across the country.
Ms Yakubu-Oyinloye, the director of the Federal Education Quality Assurance Service (FEQAS), made the call in an interview with journalists on Sunday in Lagos.
“The federal and state governments will have to come together to see how more schools will be established,” she said.
She also emphasised the importance of education quality assurance, saying it was key to ensuring standards.
According to the director, FEQAS ensures that education standards are maintained in all schools below the tertiary level.
Segun Olawole, an engineer, told journalists that tackling out-of-school syndrome in Nigeria would require a multi-faceted approach.
“Addressing the issue requires the commitment of governments, civil societies, communities and families.
“Governments should increase funding of the education sector and allocate more resources for programmes to address out-of-school syndrome,” he said.
Mr Olawole said that despite the government’s efforts, the number of children out of school kept increasing.
He said efforts should be intensified by the three tiers of government, families, communities and civil society groups to adequately address the menace.
A teacher at Mulero High School in Agege, Lagos State, who preferred anonymity, told journalists that governments should develop and effectively implement more policies to address the root causes of the menace.
He listed the causes as poverty, conflict, and cultural barriers. The teacher also urged the establishment of alternative education programmes, such as non-formal or vocational training programmes, to cater to children not in formal schools.
Also, an educationist, Adebayo Olu-Adekoya, told journalists that governments should create more awareness across communities, particularly rural communities, on the importance of education.

Update
“Governments should organise awareness campaigns to sensitise communities and families about the importance of education,” he said.
A principal, Adetoro Habeeb, said, “Communities and governments should work together to ensure there is a decrease in the number of out-of-school children.
“Governments should support community-based initiatives that provide education and skills to out-of-school children.
“Governments and community leaders should also provide support, such as conditional cash transfers and scholarships, to families to enable them to send their children to school,” Mr Habeeb said.

Mr Abubakar expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Kano State Government.
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has granted automatic employment to 54 postgraduate students who benefitted from a foreign scholarship programme to study health-related courses in India.
This was disclosed in a statement on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa, in Kano.
The statement stated that Mr Yusuf made the announcement during a reception and Iftar (Ramadan breaking of fast) organised for the students, who studied at Symbiosis International University in Pune, India, and returned to the state on Friday.
He said, “We have made all necessary arrangements to offer you automatic employment within the Kano State Civil Service. Your appointment letters will be issued shortly through the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Head of Service.
“You will also benefit from the newly implemented minimum wage of ₦71,000 in the state. We have improved allowances for healthcare workers to ensure a conducive working environment.’’
The governor expressed concern over individuals who received government-sponsored education but later left the state for employment elsewhere.
“I am surprised to see beneficiaries of government scholarships working outside Kano instead of contributing to the state’s development. We appeal to you to use your knowledge and expertise to improve the lives of our people, especially women, and address critical health issues such as maternal mortality and sickle cell anaemia,” he said.
According to him, the state’s investment in education and healthcare aims to strengthen service delivery within Kano, and retaining skilled professionals is key to achieving that goal.
Mr Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to continuing the foreign scholarship programme initiated by former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
“When we assumed office, we promised to sustain this initiative. Out of the 1,000 beneficiaries, 418 were sent to India and Uganda last year. All have graduated, while the remaining 68 students in India are expected to return by April,” he said.

According to the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Scholarship Board, Kabiru Getso, some of the specialised courses studied by the students were the first of their kind in Kano and Northern Nigeria.
“Achieving this milestone puts the state in a strong position to improve healthcare services. All the students excelled academically, completing their programmes with impressive grades and no carryovers,” Mr Getso noted.
Speaking on behalf of the graduates, the group’s captain, Yusuf Abubakar, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Kano State Government.
“Words are not enough to convey our gratitude. We are deeply thankful for this life-changing opportunity,” he said.

Why Jonathan Liken Yahoo Boys To Nigerian Leaders, Lawmakers, Judges

Why Jonathan Liken Yahoo Boys To Nigerian Leaders, Lawmakers, Judges
Why Jonathan liken yahoo boys to Nigerian leaders, lawmakers, judges. Like Yahoo Boys, Nigerian leaders, lawmakers, judges contribute to country’s bad global image. Mr Jonathan said the actions of all arms of government contribute to the value of Nigeria’s passport.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said that the actions of executive, legislature and judicial officials affect Nigeria’s global image just like the activities of internet fraudsters, popularly called Yahoo Boys.
Mr Jonathan made this statement at the annual colloquium organised by the Haske Satumari Foundation in Abuja on Saturday, where he spoke on “Promoting social change and development through diversity, equity and inclusion.”
The former president accused the executive, legislature and judiciary of the lingering crisis in Rivers State, saying, “I always plead with our people that whatever we do affects everybody, and sometimes we do things, and we think that it doesn’t affect us.”
Mr Jonathan said the actions of all arms of government contribute to the value of Nigeria’s passport and the kind of treatment citizens get outside the country.
“Why is it that our passport is not valued that much? Why is it that Nigerians are not given the kind of treatment we’re supposed to receive at international airports?” Mr Jonathan queried.
“Sometimes, we think it’s because of ‘Yahoo Boys’ or 419. Not only them; yes, they are part of the problem,” the politician said. “But whatever happens in the country, decisions that are taken by the executive arm of government, decisions that are taken by the parliament and judicial decisions affect everybody.”
Mr Jonathan further said, “For example, no businessman can bring his money to invest in a country where the judiciary is compromised, where government functionaries can dictate to judges what judgment they will give.

“No man brings his money to invest in that economy because we are taking a big risk. So whatever we do affects everybody, and if we want to build a nation where children and grandchildren will live, no matter how painful it is, we must strive to do what is right.”
Mr Jonathan’s statement comes amid lingering reputational damage from President Bola Tinubu’s sordid antecedent and sexual harassment allegation against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Kogi lawmaker Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who have continued to speak on international news platforms about her ordeal.
In January, Peoples Gazette reported how Mr Tinubu has hired lobbyists in the United States to help convince lawmakers and policymakers that he carries acceptable personal probity to lead Nigeria after suffering a reputational hit that followed reports of his involvement in illicit drug peddling and certificate fraud.
