January 30: High Court Adjourns Hearing Of Sowore’s Bail Application
High Court adjourns hearing of Sowore’s bail application. A Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed the ruling on the bail application filed by former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, to Thursday, January 30, 2025. On Wednesday, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun filed 16 cybercrime charges against the activist for labeling him an ‘Illegal IG’.
After voluntarily honoring a police invitation on Monday, Sowore was detained at the Nigerian Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) office at Old Abattoir by Guzape Junction, Abuja, due to his refusal to accept the bail conditions set by the police authorities.
Many Nigerians have described the charges as ridiculous and self-serving.
During the bail application hearing, defense counsel Abubakar Marshall requested the court to grant his client bail on self-recognizance and the most liberal terms pending the suit’s hearing.
Marshall noted that the applicant had provided evidence showing he was invited via a WhatsApp message sent by the complainant, and he honored the invitation by offering an explanation during an interview with the complainant.

High Court
Marshall also submitted that the complainant conceded the applicant is entitled to bail.
However, the prosecution counsel, M.U. Jonathan, urged the court to dismiss the bail application.
After listening to both parties, the judge adjourned the case to 1 pm on Thursday, January 30, 2025 for the ruling on the bail application.
