There’s No Democracy In Nigeria, Peter Obi Explains Why

There’s no democracy in Nigeria, Peter Obi explain why and says “let’s stop telling ourselves lies”.

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections. Peter Obi, the candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 presidential election, says Nigeria is not a democratic country.

Speaking on Tuesday during his appearance on Prime Time, a programme on Arise TV, Obi claimed that the standards for measuring democracy do not exist in Nigeria.

“I have said it, and I maintain that there is no democracy in Nigeria today,” Obi said.
“Nigeria today is not a democratic country. Let’s stop telling ourselves lies. If you look at all the tenets and yardsticks measuring democracy, it doesn’t exist here.

“Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Today, the government we have is not of the people.

“It is not by the people because the people didn’t vote. It wasn’t their votes. I’m not just talking about the presidency; it’s across the line. Look at what happened in Edo. Can you call that democracy?

“It is not the vote of the people. And it is not for the people. I have just told you that I went to an IDP camp where we have thousands of people. No primary health care.

“They were begging me to have one nurse, which I said I must make sure they have. They don’t even have a primary school, which again I have told them I will make sure it happens.”

Obi criticised the government for prioritising the wrong issues and neglecting social capital development.

“So, what are you doing for a country that just spent N21 billion to renovate the house for the vice-president who isn’t living there? And you cannot even have a primary school for kids who are going to be leaders of Nigeria tomorrow,” he said.

Reps Urged Tinubu To End Violent In Benue

Reps urged Tinubu to end violent in Benue. “I will engage with political stakeholders and security heads to ensure these atrocities come to an end. Our people deserve to live in peace,” the lawmaker said.

Blessing Onuh, representing  Otukpo-Ohimini federal constituency in the House of Representatives, has urged President Bola Tinubu’s government to curb the escalating insecurity and incessant acts in Benue.

Speaking with journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, Ms Onuh, of the All Progressives Congress, lamented the incessant attacks in Otukpo in Benue, describing the situation as a “national emergency” that requires immediate attention.

She appealed to Mr Tinubu to direct security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators, bring them justice, and restore peace to the affected communities.

“The violent in my constituency have reached an outrageous level in recent weeks. Every day we witness the senseless murder of innocent people and tragically, it is beginning to feel as though it is normal,” Ms Onuh said.

She claimed that people were being kidnapped repeatedly, yet nothing seemed to be happening to the perpetrators.

“Families mourn their dead, return home, and brace for the next attack by suspected herdsmen,” she added. Ms Onuh stated that a retired customs officer, Onche Akatu, was brutally murdered a day ago while two members of his family were kidnapped in Asa 2 community, Otukpo LGA.
“Should the dead man now rise to pay ransom for their release? My heart bleeds,” she lamented.

Ms Onuh also said a nursing mother, Felicia Ochigbo, was recently slaughtered in the Old NTA area of the Asa community, among several other violent in Benue communities.

“As I speak to you now, people are running away from their communities without even knowing if where they are going is even safe. Are these bandits above the law? Why is it so difficult to apprehend them and restore peace so that our people can sleep with their two eyes closed?” she stated.

The lawmaker also raised concerns that the fear of violence had forced many farmers to abandon their farmlands, adding that the development was worsening food shortages in the region.

Ms Onuh advised the youths against jungle justice or reprisal attacks, emphasising that taking the law into their own hands would only escalate the crisis.

She assured her constituents of her commitment to working closely with political leaders and security agencies to end the heinous acts plaguing her constituency.

“I will engage with political stakeholders and security heads to ensure these atrocities come to an end. Our people deserve to live in peace,” the lawmaker said.
