FG Vows To Upgrade Benue Swine, Crop Improvement Project

FG vows to upgrade Benue swine, crop improvement project. Mr Maiha said the government had already planned to operate an integrated piggery farming and processing initiative in the state.

The federal government says it will upgrade the Benue swine and crop improvement project in Yadev town of Gboko Local Government Area to full capacity.

The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, stated this on Saturday when he visited the project site at Akperan Orshi Polytechnic, Yadev.

Mr Maiha said the government had already planned to operate an integrated piggery farming and processing initiative in the state.

The minister expressed satisfaction with the existing project and said the initiative was noble and it would be upgraded and sustained to satisfy the people.

According to him, the farm would be upgraded to operate at its full capacity of 3,000 pigs instead of the 79 presently on the farm.
“It will be a reproductive centre where piglets will be produced for out-growers to buy,’’ he said.

He said when upgraded, the farm would encourage more genetic production instead of the three types of breeds, large white, duroc and landrace, available on the farm.

The minister, however, said the federal government would also encourage the establishment of a small modular processing unit where pig meat can be processed and packaged for sale.

“We are going to leverage technology here; we are going to bring different genetics to crossbreed with our local ones so that we have faster, bigger-growing pigs.

“We are also going to use this place as a centre for learning. We’ll ensure the availability of feeds; we need cooperatives for the out-grower system so that they can be fully integrated into the livestock business.

“Benue is very active in piggery. The government will also support the revitalisation of the poultry sector in the state.

“Benue is a largely agricultural state; it is the food basket of the nation, so we are also going to focus on the development of pastures in the state,” he pledged.

In his address, Aondoakaa Asambe, director-general of the Benue Bureau for Livestock Development, Transboundary and Animal Control, said pigs have cultural and economic value for the people of the state.

Mr Asambe said the state government would utilise the federal government’s support to maximise the full potential of the livestock sector.

FG Inaugurates Committee To Hold Dialogue On Power In Health Sector

FG inaugurates committee to hold dialogue on power in health sector. Mr Salako said experts from the health and power sectors would attend the proposed national dialogue.

The federal government is set to host a national stakeholders’ dialogue to address the challenges of huge energy costs and lack of power being faced by federal tertiary health institutions.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Salako, announced this on Friday in Abuja during a media conference, where he also inaugurated a committee to plan and prepare for the dialogue.
Mr Salako said such a dialogue has become necessary owing to the deficits in electricity provision and huge energy costs.

He said the federal government had sought to address the challenges through various initiatives such as a 50 per cent electricity subsidy for public hospitals and the provision of solar power mini-grids in selected hospitals.

“These initiatives have, however, not been able to substantially address the challenges; thus, the need for an urgent rethinking of our traditional models of power generation and supply to hospitals.

“Indeed, the current situation requires a collaborative whole-of-government approach as we work across sectors to resolve many challenging issues that are beyond the purview of the health sector,” the minister said.

Mr Salako added that some instances of alternative energy solutions were being deployed in certain health institutions nationwide.
However, he pointed out that these efforts were neither integrated nor guided by a holistic framework, operational guidelines, or an overarching policy.

He noted that there had also been reports of fire incidents, battery malfunction, theft of critical energy infrastructure, and other operational or maintenance problems in some health institutions that had embarked on alternative energy projects.

The minister added that in all the hospitals he had visited, he instructed the medical directors to explore various public-private partnership (PPP) models and develop business cases.

Additionally, he asked them to draw up strategic plans of engagement that would attract private-sector investments.

Mr Salako said the objectives of the dialogue were to assess the existing power policy environment in relation to the urgent energy needs of tertiary health facilities and other public health facilities in Nigeria.
“This assessment would be based on lessons learned from other low-middle-income countries (LMICs).

It is also to gather field experiences of the current power situation and elicit practical recommendations and best practices.

“It would also identify alternative and sustainable solutions by exploring renewable energy options, backup power systems, and energy-efficient solutions to enhance power reliability.

“It would also build consensus on policy and regulatory frameworks, funding mechanisms, and sustainability strategy for efficient power supply to tertiary health facilities and other public health institutions in the country,” the minister said.

Mr Salako said experts from the health and power sectors would attend the proposed national dialogue.

While inaugurating the dialogue implementation committee, he said it would work with certain terms of reference.

The committee is expected to convene the national stakeholders’ dialogue on power in the health sector and ensure the effective implementation of recommendations.

Court Sentences Mother, Daughter To 6 Months In Prison For Stealing Ponmo, Stockfish

Court sentences mother, daughter to 6 months prison for stealing ponmo, stockfish. Ms Odumosu sentenced both the mother and daughter to six months’ imprisonment, each with an option of a N5,000 fine.

Amagistrates’ court in Isabo, Abeokuta, on Friday, sentenced a mother and daughter, Falilatu Amidu and Ayisatu Amidu, to six months’ imprisonment each for stealing dry ponmo (cow skin), stock fish and dried meat valued at N1 million.

The defendants, who reside at No. 21 Ago-oko area in Abeokuta, Ogun, were convicted on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The magistrate, O.O. Odumosu, held that all evidence presented by the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable doubt that the convicts were guilty of the offence as charged.

Ms Odumosu sentenced both the mother and daughter to six months’ imprisonment, each with an option of a N5,000 fine.
She ordered that the convicts should refund N100,000 each to the complainant as restitution before accessing the N5,000 fine given.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Kehinde Fawunmi, told the court that the defendants committed the offence sometime in August 2024 at Lafenwa market.

Mr Fawunmi explained that Ms Falitatu conspired with her daughter, Ms Ayisatu, to steal a big sack containing stockfish, dry ponmo and dry meat valued at N1 million belonging to one Kafayat Alao.

According to
him, Ms Falilatu used to help the complainant carry loads from her store in Lafenwa to where the latter sells her items.

“The complainant asked her to help her pick goods from the store; she waited for over an hour, and she did not see the defendant, which made her go to the store to check on her.

“On getting to the store, she did not find Falilatu, and she noticed a big bag containing dried meat, ponmo, and stockfish was missing, and the defendant was nowhere to be found,” he said.

Mr Fawunmi explained that Ms Falilatu stole the goods and gave them to the daughter (Ayisatu) to sell them.

He said Ms Ayisatu received the goods from her mother, knowing that they were stolen.

The prosecutor noted that the offence contravened sections 516, 390(9) and 127 of Ogun’s Criminal Code Laws of Ogun 2006.
