Court Declares Wike’s Henchman Samuel Anyanwu As PDP National Secretary

Court declares Wike’s henchman Samuel Anyanwu as PDP national secretary. The Supreme Court on Friday declared Samuel Anyanwu, Nyesom Wike’s loyalist, as the legitimate National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The Supreme Court on Friday declared Samuel Anyanwu, Nyesom Wike’s loyalist, as the legitimate National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party.

In its judgment, the apex court set aside the decision of the Court of Appeal in Enugu, which stood against Mr Anyanwu as the opposition’s national secretary.

The court argued that the Court of Appeal lacked the authority to hear the case, insisting it involved the party’s internal affairs.

In the lead judgment read by Justice Jamilu Tukur, the apex court further described as missing certain circumstances that would have given jurisdiction for the court to decide on the internal affairs of a political party.

This development came a week after the apex court had reserved judgment in the appeal filed by Mr Anyanwu challenging his sack from office.

Mr Anyanwu challenged the decision of the Court of Appeal which affirmed the high court’s judgment, favouring Sunday Udey-Okoye as the party’s national secretary.

In his appeal, Mr Anyanwu argued that Article 47 of the PDP constitution provides for a four-year single term for party officers, claiming there was no basis for the concurrent findings of the lower courts that removed him from office.

The dispute regarding the PDP’s national secretary position started when South-East governors demanded Mr Anyanwu step down due to his governorship candidature in Imo.

The development has revealed a deep-seated divide within the party, with some key stakeholders opposing Mr Wike’s influence over the leadership of the party.

She stated that there was need for the new counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN) to address these issue to ease off tension over the already ruffled feathers.

“These clarifications were duly delivered by Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN—a towering figure, twice Attorney-General, twice Minister of Justice, and a former Senator.

“Chief Agabi, stepping into Onyendu’s brief, acted to smooth over the ruffled feathers in certain segments of the bar and bench, caused by Onyendu’s legitimate, anger-fueled outbursts against Justice Binta Nyako’s court, which led to her recusal,” she added.

NHRC Calls For Urgent Legal Reforms To Address AI-Related Human Rights Challenges

NHRC calls for urgent legal reforms to address AI-Related human rights challenges. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for an urgent review of existing laws to tackle emerging human rights concerns arising from the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Nigeria.

Speaking at a workshop on AI governance and human rights, NHRC’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, SAN, warned that without robust ethical frameworks, AI could widen inequalities, introduce algorithmic bias, invade privacy, and threaten human rights.

AI as a Double-Edged Sword

Ojukwu emphasized that while AI is reshaping societies, economies, and human interactions, its regulation must ensure that technological progress does not outpace human rights protections.

“As AI becomes more sophisticated, human oversight remains crucial. Our laws must evolve to balance innovation with ethical principles,” he said.

He called on policymakers, business leaders, technologists, and civil society groups to collaborate in ensuring AI promotes human dignity rather than undermines it.
