Nigerian Navy Commence Tactical Exercise to Sharpen Skills, Tackle Piracy
The Nigerian Navy has commenced its maiden intra-command maritime tactical live-firing exercise, code-named Exercise Littoral Fury, in Cross River State as part of efforts to strengthen its operational capacity to combat piracy, sea robbery, illegal oil bunkering and crude oil theft.

The exercise, organised by the Eastern Naval Command, is designed to enhance the combat readiness and proficiency of naval personnel in weapon handling and operations within creeks, waterways and the littoral environment.
The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, represented by the Chief of Operations, Nigerian Navy, Rear Admiral Patrick Effah, said on Wednesday that marksmanship was a fundamental combat skill that naval personnel must continuously develop.
He said, “This exercise is to enhance the Navy’s operational efficiency and effectiveness in fighting at sea, on land and through joint operations with other security agencies. Rigorous training and realistic operational drills are not just operational activities. What we will be witnessing today is geared towards ensuring that we gain the basic things that have to do with firing and hitting our target.”

He urged participants to adhere strictly to safety regulations and range orders, stressing that the exercise was not merely about winning points but about honing skills required to protect Nigeria’s maritime interests and installations.
Effah also commended the Cross River State Government for its support to the Nigerian Navy, particularly its provision of logistics for the establishment of a naval outpost at Dayspring Island.
Speaking at the event, the Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Chiedozie Okehie, said the exercise was aimed at exposing personnel to realistic operational situations and improving their ability to respond rapidly to maritime security threats.
He said the exercise would also promote joint and coordinated responses among security agencies to threats including piracy, sea robbery, illegal oil bunkering, crude oil theft, smuggling and other forms of maritime criminality.
He said, “The littoral environment presents unique operational challenges that require specialised skills, appropriate tactics, effective communication and seamless coordination among security agencies.”
The FOC added that the command had continued to leverage technology, innovation and intelligence-driven operations to improve its ability to detect and respond to maritime crimes.
Representing the Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, at the ceremony, the State Security Adviser for the Southern Senatorial District, Calabar, Navy Commander Patrick Bassey Odiong (retd.), said the state government welcomed the initiative, noting that the security of the state’s waterways was critical to economic development.
Odiong said the state’s extensive coastline and sensitive waterways required sustained security to protect economic activities, fishing communities, commercial vessels and maritime investments.

He said the government would continue to collaborate with the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies to strengthen security along the state’s waterways.
He also commended the Eastern Naval Command for its reported successes in the arrest of suspected maritime criminals and the rescue of passengers along the Calabar-Oron waterways.

AI Training: ICPC Strengthens Officers’ Capacity for Anti-Corruption Fight
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has concluded a three-day training workshop aimed at strengthening the capacity of its officers to apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions for data analysis and other aspects of the fight against corruption and related offences.

The training, organised by the Commission in collaboration with LawGPT and with support from the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), was held from 17 to 19 August 2026 in Abuja, with emphasis on the practical, responsible and secure application of AI in the Commission’s operations.
Speaking at the closing session, the Head of the External Cooperation Unit (ECU), Mr Ahmed Abdul, urged participants to adopt a hands-on approach by translating the knowledge and skills acquired during the training into practical solutions that would strengthen the Commission’s fight against corruption and related offences. He noted that the increasingly sophisticated and technology-driven nature of corruption requires anti-corruption officers to continually develop their skills and embrace contemporary tools.
Abdul also commended the Commission, under the leadership of its Chairman, Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, for demonstrating adaptability and technological awareness through bold steps towards adopting innovative technologies for positive application in the fight against corruption and related offences. He noted that such initiatives were critical to keeping the Commission abreast of emerging threats and evolving methods of perpetrating corrupt practices in an increasingly technology-driven world.
Also speaking, the Head of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Unit, Deputy Director Bashir Dagoro, thanked the facilitators and partners for their contributions and commended the Commission for putting together what he described as an important and timely training on Artificial Intelligence. He noted that the programme provided participants with relevant perspectives and practical tools necessary to advance the Commission’s technological capabilities and ensure it keeps pace with global developments in the technology sector.
Dagoro underscored the importance of safeguarding sensitive information in the adoption of AI, stressing that confidentiality must remain paramount when handling petitions, statements, case files, asset declarations and other sensitive Commission records. He further emphasised that AI tools should assist rather than replace officers, as professional judgement, verification and accountability remain indispensable in the discharge of the Commission’s mandate.
He further disclosed that the ICT Unit would develop clear internal guidelines on the acceptable use of AI within the Commission, assess hardware requirements and provide technical support for departments seeking to deploy approved offline AI tools. According to him, the initiative would also be aligned with the Commission’s ongoing implementation of the ISO/IEC 27001:2022 information security management framework.
The workshop was designed to cover AI fundamentals, responsible use and risk awareness, practical applications in petitions, research and document review, as well as confidentiality, privacy and security concerns associated with internet-based AI tools. Participants were also exposed to the distinction between cloud-based and offline AI and participated in practical sessions on installation, demonstrations, limitations and governance of offline AI tools.

The workshop concluded with resolutions and recommendations arising from participants’ group exercises and discussions, which are to be formally transmitted for the Chairman’s consideration, as well as the presentation of certificates of participation to participants.

Speaking as Guest Speaker, the IGP commended the enduring legacy of Vanguard Media Limited, particularly its founder and publisher, Mr. Sam Amuka, whose influence and reputation have remained a benchmark in the Nigerian media landscape.
The IGP underscored the pivotal role of the media in national security, describing it not as an exclusively law-enforcement affair, but as a collective national responsibility. He noted that the relationship between the Police and the media should transcend the conventional dynamic of source and reporter, evolving into a genuine strategic partnership.
IGP Disu also spoke on the dangers posed by misinformation and disinformation in security matters, advocating for credible reporting, responsible journalism, media literacy, and prompt official communication. He called for accountability and transparency in the handling of cases involving personnel misconduct, stressing that a partnership cannot thrive where one party expects cooperation while resisting accountability.
The IGP further emphasised that public trust remains one of the Force’s most valuable assets, and called on media stakeholders to deepen their collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, noting that a secure Nigeria is a shared victory for all.

EFCC, NIMC Deepen Collaboration in Gombe
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission , EFCC and the National Identity Management Commission , NIMC on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 brokered a renewed strategic alliance towards tackling the menace of corruption in Gombe, Gombe State.

The development came when the State Coordinator of the NIMC Gombe State, Maryam Sarki Othman paid a courtesy visit to the Gombe Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC , Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACEI Austine Adache in his office in Gombe State.
Othman said the the visit was aimed at strenthening the existing mutual partnership between her agency and the EFCC, particularly in the areas of identity verification and collaborative efforts to eradicate identity theft in Nigeria.
She assured the EFCC of her agency’s unrelented support in its fight against economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption.
