Adeleke Assures Osun Residents of Good Governance, Says “I’ll not Disappoint You”

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has assured residents that he will not disappoint them following his re-election for a second term, promising to consolidate his achievements and correct his mistakes.

Adeleke made the promise on Sunday during a press conference after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared him the winner of the August 15 governorship election.

He said the election followed months of intense pressure on the people of the state, adding that his victory was a result of their support.

“In the last few months, Osun people have been under very intense pressure. Today, the issues are settled by the grace of God and people.

“I, therefore, dedicate this victory to the good people of Osun State. I deeply appreciate your resilience, your strong will, and your unwavering commitment to democracy,” he said.

Adeleke, who contested on the platform of the Accord Party, said he would build on his strengths and address his shortcomings during his second term.

“As you have trusted me again for the second term in office, I will not disappoint you. To serve you better, I will reinforce my strong points and correct my errors under my renewed five-point agenda,” he said.

The governor also thanked supporters of democracy and the media for their support during the election.

“To all lovers of democracy, I thank you for supporting our struggle from home and abroad. The support is overwhelming. My faith in democracy is deepened.

Adeleke said his administration would continue to pursue development and good governance, while extending an olive branch to his opponents.

“Osun State is on the march again. We shall expand development and widen the net of good governance. In this race, there is no victor, no vanquished. I extend my olive branch to my co-contestants. I am the governor of all Osun State people.

“My vision: taking Osun from a civil service state to an industrial state and an investment destination,” he said.

Adeleke was declared the winner at about 7:24am on Sunday by the State Returning Officer, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti.

The Accord candidate polled 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who scored 444,815 votes.

Adeleke won 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji won 11. The African Democratic Congress candidate, Najeem Salam, came third with 17,180 votes.

The victory secured Adeleke a second term after he was elected governor in 2022 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party before moving to the Accord Party for the 2026 election.

President Tinubu Congratulates Adeleke, Says “I Wish Him Great Success”

President Bola Tinubu has described Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election in the Osun State governorship election as an assurance that democracy will continue to flourish in Nigeria.

Tinubu stated this in a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, following Adeleke’s victory in the August 15 election.

The President said he had called Adeleke to congratulate him on his victory.

He added that the result reflected the confidence the people of Osun had in the governor.

“I called Governor Ademola Adeleke earlier today to congratulate him on his election victory in Osun State. His victory once again confirmed the confidence the people of Osun State have in him.

“I wish him great success as he prepares to lead the state for the next four years. Now that he has won, Governor Adeleke must unite the people of Osun State and rally them for growth, stability, and social and economic progress, regardless of the political choices they made at the election.

“I salute the courage and discipline displayed by other contestants in the election. Their participation deepened and enriched our country’s democratic culture. The outcome of the election reflects the will of the people and is a fitting assurance that democracy will continue to flourish in our land,” Tinubu said.

Let Peace Prevail, Obi Urges Stakeholders in Osun Election

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure a peaceful, free and credible governorship election in Osun State.

Obi made the call in a statement shared on X on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s governorship poll.

He said Osun belonged to its people and urged institutions, political actors, the diplomatic community, international observers and other stakeholders to uphold neutrality, professionalism and restraint.

“Osun belongs to its people. Therefore, I call on the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, political parties, candidates, government institutions, civil society organisations, religious and traditional leaders, the media, and every stakeholder to act with the highest degree of neutrality, professionalism, and restraint,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor said residents must be allowed to exercise their franchise freely and without intimidation.

“The people of Osun must be allowed to vote freely, safely, and without intimidation. Their votes must be counted transparently, protected faithfully, and announced according to the genuine will of the electorate,” he added.

Obi appealed to residents of the state not to allow political competition to divide their communities or lead to violence.

“To those within Osun State, I appeal for peace. Do not allow politicians to turn your neighbours, friends, and communities against each other. Do not destroy your state in the name of winning an election.

“Nigeria is bigger than any candidate, and Osun is greater than any political party,” he said.

He also cautioned politicians, supporters, influencers and financiers outside the state against importing violence and intimidation into Osun.

“To those outside Osun—politicians, supporters, influencers, and financiers—I urge you to exercise restraint. Do not import violence, intimidation, or desperation into a state whose people have the constitutional right to choose their leaders peacefully,” Obi said.

“To our security agencies, your loyalty must be to Nigeria and the Constitution, not to any political party or individual. Your duty is to protect every voter equally,” he said.

Obi also urged INEC to protect the credibility of the election from the preparatory stage through voting, collation and the declaration of results.

“To INEC, the credibility of this election must be safeguarded from the preparatory stages to accreditation, voting, collation, and declaration. Every irregularity must be addressed seriously, and every legitimate vote must count,” he added.

He called on the international community, diplomatic missions and election observers to closely monitor the election, saying their presence could strengthen public confidence in the democratic process.

“Democracy is not merely about who wins. Democracy is about whether the people are truly allowed to choose,” Obi said.

He urged political actors and residents to ensure that the election did not degenerate into violence.

“Let Osun demonstrate to Nigeria, and indeed the world, that political competition can be intense without degenerating into violence; that disagreement can exist without hatred; and that power can change hands through ballots rather than blood,” he said.

Obi added, “Let every vote count. Let every voter be protected. Let every legitimate result be respected. And above all, let peace reign in Osun State.”

He concluded, “Nigeria is watching. Africa is watching. The world is watching. Let us provide them with a democratic process worthy of the Nigerian people. A new Nigeria is possible.”
