VC Says “Over 65% Of Graduate Nurses In Nigeria Trained By NOUN”

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) says more than 65 percent of nurses with first degrees in Nigeria were trained by the institution.

Uduma Oji Uduma, vice-chancellor of the university, stated this on Tuesday during the launch of the NOUN Emergency Health Centre at the institution’s model study centre in Dutse-Alhaji, Abuja.

Uduma said the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria recently confirmed the figure to the university management.

The vice-chancellor said the institution would continue expanding access to education and healthcare support for Nigerians.

He said the launch marked the commencement of emergency health centres across 39 study centres nationwide as part of the first phase of the initiative.

“It is an ongoing process. All study centres will get these facilities for the students’ benefit because their lives are highly valued. I am happy that the Red Cross is training our staff,” he said.

The vice-chancellor added that the university management had approved the engagement of some nurses as volunteers.

He said the initiative would end situations where students struggle with health challenges during examinations and other academic activities.

According to him, the centres would provide first aid and other basic clinical services.

Uduma said the emergency health centres would not replace health maintenance organisations (HMOs), but would stabilise patients before referrals to hospitals and other medical facilities.

He assured that the number of centres with the facilities would double by August.

Uduma said the university planned to ensure that all NOUN study centres have emergency health facilities before the end of the year.

He said the initiative aligned with the federal government’s mandate on students’ welfare and healthcare.

Uduma added that the facilities would boost confidence among prospective students seeking admission into the university.

Hassan Mohamed, head of the university clinic, said the centres would handle basic medical cases and emergencies.

Mohamed said members of staff were already undergoing response to emergencies training, adding that the first aid personnel would undergo additional training programmes in the future.

According to him, severe cases would be referred to hospitals after initial treatment at the emergency centres.

Mohamed also displayed the medical equipment and supplies provided at the centres to the vice-chancellor and other officials.

ICPC Director Honoured By NANS With An Award “Vanguard Of Good Leadership And Epitome Of Hope”

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has conferred the prestigious title of “Vanguard of Good Leadership and Epitome of Hope” upon the Director of Administration and Human Resources of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Alhaji Musa Ibrahim Alkali, mni.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony, the leader of the student delegation, Comrade James Oneze, explained that the association had meticulously followed the Director’s outstanding professional record.

He described Alkali as a man of solid integrity with an immaculate career in public service.

Comrade Oneze also commended the Commission for its relentless efforts, particularly in the recovery of stolen assets from corrupt individuals.

Furthermore, he expressed the students’ appreciation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, specifically lauding the impact of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

He noted that the fund has significantly alleviated financial pressures for many indigenous students by covering their academic fees, which in turn helps to reduce the propensity towards crime and other social vices.

In his response, Alhaji Alkali expressed profound gratitude to the student body and reaffirmed the ICPC’s commitment to national development.

“The ICPC’s contributions to national development cannot be overemphasised,” he stated. “When corruption is tackled head-on, many other societal challenges, especially insecurity and poverty, are simultaneously addressed.”

The director urged the students to continue distinguishing themselves positively while partnering with the Commission in the fight against corruption. “The youths are major stakeholders in our work, and we will continue to work with you because when we develop the youth, we develop the nation,” he added.

Alhaji Alkali’s receipt of the NANS award comes just weeks after he was bestowed with another significant honour. In March 2026, the Northern Youth Organisation of Nigeria (NYON) named him the “Garkuwan Matasan Arewa” (The Shield of Northern Youth) and conferred upon him the Sir Ahmadu Bello Platinum Integrity Leadership Award. Only Foolish People Believe I’m Working For Tinubu Behind The Scenes: Kwankwaso

Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano, has dismissed claims insinuating he is working for the interest of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Kwankwaso, who spoke on Wednesday night in an interview with Global TV, noted that certain persons have been peddling the rumours since his days in the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

Sanusi Bature, spokesperson for Abba Yusuf, Kano governor, had alleged that Kwankwaso, former national leader of the NNPP, is indirectly working for Tinubu’s re-election.

He alleged that Kwankwaso worked for Tinubu in 2023, and had recently pushed for a direct meeting with the president, which did not materialise.

However, Kwankwaso refuted the allegations, saying only foolish people would believe the claims.

“I think only foolish people would believe that. We are not working for anybody. We are only working for NDC,” he said.

“Bola Tinubu has been my senior brother and good friend up till now. But that doesn’t mean we shall pull all our political ideologies together with him.

“He is doing his own and I am doing my own.”

The ex-minister of defence said even though he belongs to another political party, he believes the president is not aware of the issues plaguing the country because those around him are not telling him the truth.

“Normally under the current circumstances, the president may not see what is happening. And unfortunately, most of the people around him are actually the ones creating the problems,” Kwankwaso said.

“So, in those circumstances, it is difficult to see who will advise him or tell him the obvious situation. What they normally tell and what they are doing is to pick governors. I think going by the number of governors now, APC is number one.”

On May 3, Kwankwaso and Peter Obi, 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where they have been holding talks bordering on a joint presidential ticket.

However, Bature said any potential political arrangement between the duo would be short-lived.

Reacting, Kwankwaso said his camp decided to support Obi because it believes he is the best candidate from the south.

“When we joined the NDC, we invited all our leaders from the six geo-political zones and we sat down and looked at the situations. We then decided to come together and work as a family,” Kwankwaso said.

“The party, in its own wisdom, decided to zone the presidential ticket to the south. We looked around across the zones and we realised that Peter Obi is the best candidate. That was our assessment at that particular time.”

Asked if he is popular across the north and how he would help Obi galvanise votes in the north-east and north-west, Kwankwaso said the coalition still has enough time to convince Nigerians before the general election.

“I can’t start telling our viewers that I am popular. I think it’s up to the people out there to tell. We are just in the field, working very hard,” he said.

“We are trying to convince the people, even those who are going about telling lies to try to take advantage of our differences in the country, which should be our strength, we are working on that.

“And I am happy to say that we are very lucky because from now till January 16, 2027, we have about eight months, which is enough time.

“Those who are telling the lies, the lies will come out and people will also identify those who are telling the truth and are serious.”
