NAF Reinforces Air Power Through Advanced Technical Training On Agusta Westland AW109 Trekker Helicopter
Agusta Westland. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has further strengthened its operational readiness following the successful completion of a six-week specialist training programme on the AW109 Trekker helicopter at the Leonardo Helicopters facility in Italy.
Undertaken under the leadership of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the initiative underscores the Service’s deliberate commitment to building a technically proficient and self-reliant force capable of sustaining modern air operations.
The programme extended beyond routine instruction, providing personnel with intensive hands-on exposure to advanced maintenance procedures, system diagnostics, and the management of critical aircraft subsystems.
These competencies are pivotal to improving aircraft serviceability, reducing mission downtime, and ensuring sustained fleet availability across diverse operational environments. In contemporary air operations, such technical expertise remains a decisive enabler of mission success, particularly in counterinsurgency, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), and rapid mobility missions where responsiveness is critical.
Having completed the training, the personnel have since been redeployed to operational units, where their expertise will immediately enhance fleet performance and mission effectiveness across theatres of operation. Their contribution will strengthen the Nigerian Air Force’s capacity for faster, more reliable responses to emerging threats and the continued protection of Nigeria’s airspace.
