EFCC Officials Mark Properties Linked To Malami In Abuja For Forfeiture: “Keep Off”

“Keep off”. The marking of Malami’s alleged properties took place hours after former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar visited his residence.

The EFCC operatives, alongside armed security personnel, who carried out the exercise on Monday morning, were challenged by the former minister and people around him.

In a video posted on social media, Malami asked a man, who appears to be an EFCC official, to show him the court order authorising them to mark and take over his residence.

The official told the former AGF that the anti-graft agency has the right to mark the property since it is under forfeiture.

Malami responded that the forfeiture order has expired and asked the EFCC official to show him the document authorising the marking.

The inscription, “Restrained order EFCC keep off”, was marked on one of the properties linked to Malami.

In January, a federal high court in Abuja ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 properties suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities allegedly linked to Malami and two of his sons, Abdulaziz Malami and Abiru Rahman Malami.

The court directed the EFCC to publish the interim forfeiture order in a national daily newspaper, inviting any individual or organisation with an interest in the assets to appear before the court within 14 days and show cause why a final forfeiture order should not be made.

In February, Malami filed an application challenging the interim forfeiture of the properties linked to him.

RELEASE FROM CUSTODY

The former AGF is standing trial on two separate criminal charges.

Last week, Malami was released from custody after a court granted him bail.

On February 27, a federal high court in Abuja granted bail to Malami and his son, Abdulaziz, in the sum of N200 million each over alleged terrorism-related offences.

Malami and his son were arraigned on February 3 on a five-count charge bordering on alleged terrorism financing and illegal possession of firearms.

The Department of State Services (DSS) accused the former minister of refusing to prosecute terrorism financiers whose case files were reportedly forwarded to the office of the attorney-general for prosecution while he was in the office.

The EFCC had arraigned Malami, his son and wife, over allegations bordering on money laundering to the tune of N8,713,923,759.49.

He stated that corruption was responsible for the stagnation, retardation, distortion and dislocation of growth and development in our nation. He charged them to understand the havocs being wrecked on the nation by corrupt practices and make concerted efforts to confront them.

“As students, you need to have deeper insights into the havoc being wrecked on our nation by the monster of corruption. In its simplest description, corruption is the compromise of rules, regulations, policies, standards and directive principles of running a system. It is deliberate use of public opportunities, resources and privileges for private gains. In any system where corruption holds sway, no progress of any kind can be made. Nigeria is in its present state owing to the cumulative effects of corrupt practices”, he said.

He took time to explain the various typologies of fraudulent dealings the EFCC is tackling. They include money laundering, embezzlement, forgery, advance fee fraud, contract scam, employment scam, land and property fraud, tax fraud, internet fraud, stealing, bribery, procurement fraud, banking fraud, among others. “All these crimes are variants of corrupt practices. Every form of internet fraud, such as romance scam, business email compromise, hacking, impersonation, forex scam and others are corrupt practices and must not be found among you”, he said.

Also Speaking, Head Enlightenment and Reorientation Unit of the EFCC, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE11 Aisha Muhammed, reiterated the role children can play in the fight against corruption and cybercrime. She charged them to imbibe the spirit of integrity and shun all forms of corruption and other societal menace.

“Children are very important in the fight against corruption. What we are doing now is the preventive mandate of the EFCC and do you know why? You are the future of Nigeria. We have to mould you from now, we have to tell you the good, bad and the ugly. When we tell you all these, we also have to direct your perspective and position because you are an important stakeholder in this fight”, she said.

She further called on the students to shun all forms of corruption urging them to say “No” when the need arises, adding that through these interactions and enlightenment, students can learn how to say no.

“Continuing, Mohammed pointed out that, “You have to learn to say No, and one way to say No is for us to talk to you by creating an integrity club here for you to voice out. We try to instil the spirit of integrity in you, talk to you about societal menaces that are happening, new trends in cybercrime and we want you to be our partners, help us fight against corruption because your voices matter.”

Speaking on behalf of the School management, Patron of the school, Chijoke Okoro, appreciated the effort of the EFCC in installing the spirit of good moral conduct in the students and finding the school worthy for the establishment of an Integrity Club.

Head Boy of the school, Marwan Aliyu, stated that the presence of the EFCC demonstrated its commitment to shaping the younger generation into responsible citizens who will stand against corruption and uphold truth and transparency in all areas of life.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to rural development and infrastructure expansion with the commissioning of the 11km Owot Uta-Nung Oku- Edeobom road project.

The governor, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, said the project was part of the administration’s determination to open up rural communities, stimulate economic growth and improve the movement of agricultural produce across the state.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Eyakenyi said the road constructed in partnership with the World Bank under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project(RAAMP), was among the first projects flagged off by the administration shortly after the Governor’s inauguration and had remained significant to the government’s ARISE Agenda.

She noted that the administration had continued to prioritise education, agriculture, healthcare and road infrastructure across the 31 local government areas of the state.

“Today, we have constructed over 1,300 kilometres of roads and 40 bridges across the three senatorial districts.

Eyakenyi commended the World Bank and the French Development Agency for partnering with the state government on the project, stressing that similar road projects were ongoing in other local government areas.

“There is no local government area without an ongoing project in healthcare, agriculture, education, roads and other sectors.”

The deputy governor disclosed that the Governor recently approved the release of N5.9bn to the State Universal Basic Education Board for the 2025/2026 intervention projects, adding that he had also approved the recruitment of 1,000 additional primary school teachers.

The State Project Coordinator, Pastor Gideon Akpan, thanked the governor for creating an enabling environment for collaboration with the World Bank and other development agencies.

He said the state had become a model in infrastructure development, noting that under the International Labour Organisation framework, indigenes of the state had been engaged in road maintenance across project in communities.

Akpan explained that the payment of counterpart funding by the state government had ensured the successful delivery of the project and other rural access roads.

Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Offiong Offor, described the road project as a major step towards the realisation of the governor’s agricultural revolution agenda.

She said the road would reduce transportation costs, improve food distribution and increase efficiency in the movement of farm produce from rural communities to urban centres.

Also, the representative of the World Bank Country Director, Mrs Anna Bjerde, said the project would facilitate access to education, agriculture and employment opportunities for residents.
