“The Just Shall Live By Faith”, What It Really Means: Abel Damina

“The just shall live by faith”, what it really means: Abel Damina. Few phrases in Scripture are quoted as often—and misunderstood as deeply—as the statement, “The just shall live by faith.” Habakkuk 2:4 and repeated in Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11, and Hebrews 10:38, this verse is commonly interpreted to mean a life of personal effort, continual striving to please God, or using faith as a spiritual tool to obtain things from Him. Yet such interpretations fall short of what the Scriptures are truly communicating.

In Romans 1:16–17, Paul explains that in the gospel “the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith,” and then anchors his argument with the phrase, “The just shall live by faith.” Paul is not describing how believers pursue blessings; he is explaining how righteousness itself is received. The emphasis is not on achievement, but on origin. The righteous one lives because of faith, not because of works. Faith is the means by which life begins, not the method by which rewards are earned.

Central to this understanding is the fact that Scripture speaks not merely of human faith, but of the faith of Christ. Galatians 2:16 declares that a man is justified not by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ. Paul goes further in Galatians 2:20, stating that the life he now lives, he lives by the faith of the Son of God.

This shifts the focus entirely away from human performance. It is not faith in one’s own faith, but faith in what Christ has already accomplished. The believer lives because Jesus believed, obeyed, and completed the work of redemption.Death, burial, ressurection, Ascension and Glorification of Jesus (DBRAG)

The word “live” in this context refers to salvation life, not daily struggle or spiritual pressure. Jesus Himself explains in John 5:24 that whoever believes has everlasting life and has passed from death to life. Paul echoes this truth in Ephesians 2:8–9, declaring that salvation is by grace through faith, not of works. This life is eternal life received at salvation—not a motivational slogan for trying harder in everyday living.

The misunderstanding arises when this verse is interpreted through a law-based mindset. Galatians 3:11–12 makes it clear that no one is justified by the law, affirming that “the just shall live by faith,” while also stating that the law is not of faith.

Any attempt to “live by faith” through performance, pressure, or self-effort directly contradicts the meaning of the verse. Faith is not strain; faith is rest.

Hebrews reinforces this truth by presenting faith as the response to a finished work. Hebrews 4:3 tells us that those who have believed have entered into rest. Hebrews 10:12 declares that Jesus, having offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down. Faith is not striving to complete what is unfinished; faith is receiving what has already been completed.

In conclusion, “The just shall live by faith” does not mean trying harder, believing more intensely, or performing better. It means that the righteous one lives because of Christ’s finished work. We do not come alive by our faithfulness; we come alive by His faithfulness.
