Nasarawa Residents Begs Tinubu Government To Set Up Abuja-Keffi Train Service

Nasarawa residents begs Tinubu Government to set up Abuja-Keffi train service. They said that this would offer citizens an alternative means of transportation.

Some residents of Keffi LGA of Nasarawa have appealed to the federal government to set up a train service linking Abuja to Keffi.

They said that this would offer citizens an alternative means of transportation. They made the appeal on Thursday in Keffi.

Since the commencement of the Abuja-Kaduna train service, some Nigerians plying the route had  embraced the alternative transport means, thereby reducing the pressure on vehicular movement on that stretch.

Due to the proximity of Nasarawa to Abuja and with some civil servants preferring to live in cheaper houses in border communities bordering Nasarawa and Abuja, some of the respondents also  believed  it was not out of place to set up a train service for that corridor to ease the pressure on the highway linking both places.

They added that the move would create alternative transport means for citizens  plying that axis, especially workers who had  to get to their respective places of work as early as possible.
Segun Damisa, a commuter, said in Keffi that setting up the railway transport service for that route, would  be a game-changer.

He added that it would also be a relief for commuters who suffered harrowing traffic gridlocks daily on their way  to work in Abuja in the morning and back  to their homes in Nasarawa later in the day.

“If the train service is created for this place, it will change everything. It will reduce the suffering people are enduring every day on this Abuja-Keffi highway.

“People will go to work on time and return on time. There won’t be issues of any car failure and accidents will reduce. The train service will also help to reduce the constant gridlock on the road, as many people will leave their cars at home, leave the road and use the train.

“So I want to use this opportunity to appeal to the federal government  to work out a train route for this place. It will really go a long way for Nigerians,” he said.

Halima Adamu, a Keffi resident, also clamoured for the Abuja-Keffi train service, noting that it was a more secure means of transport compared to vehicular transportation.

“We keep hearing of how criminals stop vehicles on the highway to steal from passengers and the numerous ‘one-chance’ incidents we often hear. This is aside from the constant accidents on the road.

“But with a train, there is more security. Although it’s not perfect. We heard about the derailment of a train from Abuja to Kaduna recently. So it is  not perfect,  but it is far safer than road transportation. So we really need it here and hope that the government will listen and take action,” she said.

Nwankwo Benedict said he wanted the train service, as he needed to also experience the success stories commuters of the Abuja-Kaduna train route had been experiencing.

He added that the construction of a railway line from Abuja to Keffi and in future to Lafia and Makurdi would facilitate easy transportation of goods, especially farm produce; hence, the call on the government to seriously consider the idea.

“A lot of people have been saying it is convenient, comfortable and reliable. I want the government to construct it here so that more Nigerians like myself can believe in and embrace train transportation for good.
“You know we Nigerians rely heavily on road transportation, especially the poor and middle-class Nigerians, as air transport is too expensive.

Train transportation, according to the comments we have heard, will go a long way for this section of Nigerians.

“The good thing is that because of the proximity of Nasarawa to Abuja, this project is doable and feasible and probably cheaper than the Abuja-Kaduna train service.

“From Abuja to Keffi will be probably 30 minutes or thereabouts and the impact on the transportation of people, goods and services, through  that route will be massive. For me, it is going to be a win-win situation for the government and the people,” he explained.

FCT Police Warn NLC Against Planned Abuja Protest, Say Proscribed Groups Plot To Hijack

FCT Police warn NLC against planned Abuja protest, say proscribed groups plot to hijack. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command has warned the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) against its planned protest scheduled for Tuesday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The NLC leadership had fixed February 3 for a solidarity rally along with members of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria and the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) at the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) secretariat in Garki Area 11.

The NLC declared that the rally is to publicly affirm that “an injury to one is an injury to all”, adding that the Nigerian labour movement will not abandon its members.

On January 24, the labour body declared support for the indefinite strike by workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), describing the action as “necessary and heroic” in response to alleged violation of workers’ rights.

In a statement, Joe Ajaero, NLC president, said the labour union stood “in very strong solidarity” with FCTA workers under the aegis of JUAC.

Ajaero described the strike as “a necessary and heroic response to a vicious cocktail of neoliberal attacks, gross administrative impunity, and a systematic violation of the fundamental rights of workers by the FCTA management and its political leadership”.

However, in a statement on Monday, Josephine Adeh, FCT police spokesperson, said the command respects the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, but noted that intelligence reports indicate “plans by proscribed groups and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest, posing a risk to public peace and safety”.

Adeh said in the interest of public safety, the organisers should consider rescheduling the protest to prevent any breakdown of law and order and to protect lives, property, and the rights of other residents.

“The Command remains committed to safeguarding all lawful activities and urges residents to continue cooperating with security agencies to keep the FCT peaceful and secure,” the statement reads.
Meanwhile, the national industrial court has reportedly issued an interim order restraining the NLC, TUC and JUAC from embarking on the planned protest.

The court had earlier ordered workers on the payroll of the FCT administration to suspend the strike.

Emmanuel Subilim, the presiding judge, held that although the matter before the court amounted to a trade dispute, the defendants’ right to embark on industrial action was not absolute.

Akwa Ibom Indigenes Protest RMAFC Meeting, Warn Against Tampering With State’s Oil Wells

Akwa Ibom indigenes protest RMAFC meeting, warn against tampering with State’s Oil Wells. Akwa Ibom indigenes resident in Abuja on Tuesday stormed the venue of a meeting of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), where the Inter-Agency Technical Committee (IATC) on Disputed/New Oil Wells was sitting, to protest what they described as attempts to reopen a matter already settled by the Supreme Court.

The protesters cautioned that no individual or agency should tamper with Akwa Ibom State’s 76 oil wells, stressing that the ownership of the wells was conclusively determined in favour of the state by the Supreme Court in 2012.

They insisted that any move to revisit the issue through administrative or technical processes would amount to a disregard for the authority of the apex court and could undermine peace in the Niger Delta region.

Akwa Ibom State was formally represented at the IATC meeting by a high-powered delegation comprising leading legal practitioners, government officials and technocrats. Members of the delegation included Paul Usoro, SAN; Assam Assam, SAN; the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Uko Udom, SAN; Uwemedimo Nwoko, SAN; Emmanuel Enoidem, SAN; and a former Attorney-General of Akwa Ibom State.
