Wike Declares Friday Work-Free Day, Imposes Movement Restriction For Area Council Elections

Wike declares Friday work-free day, imposes movement restriction for area council elections. Ahead of the February 21, 2026 Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike has declared Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day and imposed a movement restriction across the territory from 8:00 pm on Friday to 6:00 pm on Saturday.

The announcements were made in a special broadcast aired on national television and radio stations on Thursday evening.

Mr Wike, with the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said the measures were to enable residents to travel to their communities and participate fully in the elections for chairmen and councillors in the six area councils.

He urged FCT residents to turnout in large numbers to vote, emphasising the need for orderly and peaceful conduct.

“Let us respect the rules, respect each other, and respect the outcome of the election,” the minister said. “We must show the world that we are a mature and responsible electorate, capable of conducting ourselves with dignity and decorum.”

The FCT Administration expressed hope that the elections would produce leaders who will contribute meaningfully to development, peace, and prosperity in the territory.

ADC Expresses Concerne Over Voter Suppression Move: FCT Election

ADC expresses concerne over voter suppression move: FCT Election. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) expresses serious concern over government’s declaration of premature curfew in Abuja ahead of the upcoming elections on Saturday.

The party asserts that government’s decision to impose restrictions on movement a day before the election is a blatant move to suppress voter turnout, having realised that it stood no chance in the election.

While some restrictions on movements on election day may be justified , the conventional practice is for such restrictions to commence at midnight on election day.

We are therefore concerned by the decision of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike to impose a curfew on the FCT from 8pm on Friday. The ADC will therefore like to register our strong objections to this premature restrictions on movement.

Elections must be conducted in an atmosphere that is not only safe but also visibly free and open to all eligible voters.

Abuja residents must be able to travel safely to their polling units, remain there until the voting process is concluded, and return home without fear of harassment, obstruction, or arbitrary restriction of movement.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says he will ensure that candidates not endorsing President Bola Tinubu’s reelection do not win in the FCT area councils’ election scheduled for February 21.

Mr Wike stated this in Abuja on Saturday night, during Senator Sandy Onor’s 60th birthday.

The minister, who said he owed no one an apology for endorsing Mr Tinubu, promised to support any candidate who supports the president at all costs, regardless of their political party.

“We have the FCT area council election coming up on February 21, and I have a duty to support any candidate who supports President Tinubu to win.

“It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate who is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology for my stand,” Mr Wike said.

About 1.68 million registered voters have been cleared to participate in the elections, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Voters are expected to choose chairpersons and vice-chairpersons across the six area councils, as well as 62 councillors covering 68 constituencies.

While the ruling All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party and African Democratic Congress had fielded candidates for the poll, Labour Party was barred from fielding candidate in the process over nomination irregularities.

Meanwhile, Mr Wike described the celebrant as a “credible ally, a trustworthy friend and good brother.”

According to him, Mr Onor is not just a friendly but a reliable friend, even in times of trouble, “when you know who is a friend.

“I will continue to be with you and work with you, because I know even if I am not alive today, you will not abandon my family,” Mr Wike said.
