Deputy Speaker Kalu Reveals Why Nigeria’s Vast Mineral Resources Remain Untapped
Deputy speaker Kalu reveals why Nigeria’s vast mineral resources remain untapped. Nigeria is home to a wealth of untapped mineral resources, yet the country continues to rely on imports for refined mineral products. Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has called for urgent reforms in education and infrastructure to bridge this gap.
Speaking at the 37th Convocation Ceremony and 50th Anniversary of the University of Calabar, Hon. Kalu stressed the need for a shift towards a more practical, skills-based education system.
Addressing an audience at the University of Calabar, Deputy Speaker Kalu pointed out that Nigeria’s education system has focused too much on theory while neglecting industries that could transform the economy. He highlighted the country’s vast mineral wealth, citing major deposits across different regions from gold and lithium to tin and coal.
Kalu: “Nigeria is abundantly blessed with solid minerals, yet for decades, our education system has focused more on theoretical disciplines than on harnessing the country’s vast natural wealth. Few universities dedicate faculties to mining, mineral processing, or extractive metallurgy. Research into value addition, refining, and sustainable mining practices remains minimal.”
Despite these vast resources, Nigeria remains a net importer of many refined mineral products. According to Kalu, the mining sector contributed only 0.3% to Nigeria’s GDP in the third quarter of 2022—an increase from 0.2% in 2021 but still far below its potential.
He detailed the distribution of Nigeria’s rich mineral deposits:
North Central: Tin, columbite, tantalite, barite
North West: Gold, granite, limestone
North East: Gypsum, kaolin, bentonite
South West: Bitumen, feldspar, lithium
South East: Lead, zinc, coal, oil, and gas
South South: Limestone, clay, rare earth elements
To harness these resources, Kalu is advocating for universities to establish specialized faculties in mining, collaborate with industry leaders, and offer hands-on training in mineral processing. Beyond education, the Deputy Speaker also emphasized the urgent need to improve Nigeria’s power infrastructure, arguing that industrialization cannot thrive without a stable electricity supply.

Deputy Speaker
Kalu: “No economy whether maritime, digital, or industrial can thrive in darkness. Reliable electricity is the backbone of development, yet communities remain trapped in cycles of blackouts. The Electricity Act of 2023 was a watershed moment, but more needs to be done to ensure its full implementation.”
He urged investments in gas distribution infrastructure and sustainable energy solutions to power industries across the country.
With the right policies, investments, and an education system aligned with national resources, Kalu believes Nigeria can unlock its full potential and achieve economic prosperity.
But will these proposed changes be implemented? Only time will tell.

President Tinubu Urges Love, Charity To Vulnerable

President Tinubu Urges Love, Charity To Vulnerable
President Tinubu urges love, charity to vulnerable. Mr Tinubu urged Muslims not to return to the old and unacceptable paths but to remain steadfast in practicing the righteous virtues.
President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to embrace the spirit of Eid-el-Fitr by demonstrating greater love and compassion, particularly toward the vulnerable, and extending acts of charity to all.
The president said this in an interview with journalists after the Eid-el-Fitr prayers marking the end of Ramadan at the Abuja National Eid Prayer Ground on Sunday.
The president urged Muslims not to return to the old and unacceptable paths but to remain steadfast in practicing the righteous virtues they had learned during Ramadan.
“We should continue the good deeds as taught during the Holy month of Ramadan: care for the vulnerable, the orphans and less privileged.
“Everything that we have observed, we should not revert to the path that is not acceptable to the teachings of this month,” the president said.
In his sermon, Abdulkadir Sholagberu, the chief imam of the National Mosque, Abuja, who led the prayers, reiterated the need for Muslims to continue in the spirit of Ramadan, which includes exhibiting a life of love, cooperation in righteousness, and care for the poor and vulnerable.
He stressed that it is imperative to continue in the life of worship, holiness, and obedience to Allah even after Ramadan.

“We must continue to cooperate in righteousness. During the fast, we showed love to one another; we cared for people in need, we extended charity, and our country was peaceful. Why should we return to rancour after Ramadan,” the imam further stated.
He urged the Muslim faithful to live in peace, harmony, and love of the country, devoid of discrimination.
Today is Mr Tinubu’s first Eid-el-Fitr celebration in Abuja since 2023.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, members of the Federal Executive Council, and other senior government officials were also in attendance.

Eid-el-Fitr: Wike Seeks Continued Prayer For Tinubu, Good Governance
Eid-el-Fitr: Wike seeks continued prayer for Tinubu, good governance. The minister described FCT as the “centre of unity” and urged residents to always uphold and exhibit that unity.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called on Nigerians to continue praying for President Bola Tinubu for impactful leadership and good governance.
Mr Wike made the call in his Sallah message on Sunday for the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr, which signals the end of Ramadan.
He described the task of building Nigeria and its capital territory as a collective dream — one of peace, prosperity, and unity.
The minister added that the country needed citizen’s support, faith, and, most importantly, continued prayers for divine wisdom and guidance in building Nigeria “and a federal capital that we will all be proud of.”
“I commend residents of the FCT for their acts of charity, kindness, and generosity toward one another throughout the holy month.
“Your commitment to supporting the less privileged, fostering community bonds, and spreading love and peace is truly admirable.
“As we celebrate Eid, I urge all residents to continue to embody these noble virtues even beyond Ramadan, as they are essential to building a harmonious and prosperous society,” he said.
The minister described FCT as the “centre of unity” and urged residents to uphold and exhibit that unity at all times.
“Let us live in peace, harmony, and respecting one another, irrespective of religious or ethnic differences, including working together for the common good of all,” he said.
Mr Wike assured residents that the FCT Administration remained steadfast in its commitment to the infrastructural development of the territory and the welfare and security of all residents.

He added that the administration would continue to prioritise policies and initiatives that enhanced the quality of life in the FCT and ensure a safe and conducive environment for all.
“As residents of the nation’s capital, we must all take responsibility for ensuring peace and stability in our communities.
“I call on you to resist any attempt by individuals or groups seeking to create disharmony within our ranks or disrupt the peace we cherish.
“Let us remain united and not allow anyone to sow seeds of division or instigate public disturbance.
“Security is a collective duty, and I encourage everyone to promptly report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities,” Mr Wike said.
